LIFE’S JOURNEY
Precious Lord, take my hand, lead me on, let me stand. I am tired, I am weak, I am worn Through the storm, through the night Lead me on to the light, Take my hand, Precious Lord, and Lead me on.
Deaconess LUCY MAE WRIGHT JONES, the youngest child of the late Reverend Hilman C. Wright and Lucy Neal Wright, was born December 17, 1942 in South Hill, VA. God in his infinite wisdom called Lucy to rest on April 7, 2020, surrounded by her daughters in North Chesterfield, VA. She was also preceded in death by three brothers-George, Claxton, and Clarence Wright. Lucy was baptized at an early age and became a member of Temple Gate RZUA Church.
She attended John Groom Elementary School and graduated from the former East End High School in 1961. She attended Hampton Institute (University) where she received a B.S. degree in Social Science.
On November 6, 1971 Lucy married Alpheus Jones and to this union two daughters, Stacy and Alicia, were born.
Lucy taught 33 years in Mecklenburg County- teaching at East End High School, Clarksville Elementary, and Park View Senior High. She also worked at St. Paul’s College for two years as a Counselor. She coached the women’s basketball team at PVHS for one year. Lucy was a faithful, active, and dedicated member of Temple Gate RZUA Church where she served as Supertindent of the Sunday school, taught the Junior Class for a number of years, advisor to the Junior Choir and Rising Zion, member of the Missionary Circle, the Deaconess Board and the Usher Board. She drafted the first budget for the church and served as the first financial secretary.
Lucy was a member of several community organizations: Sisters of Faith, Hester Spain Missionary Outreach, Life-time member of NEA and VEA, Mecklenburg Senior Citizens Board and the Household of Ruth #5430.
Lucy will be remembered for the many things she accomplished, but more for the type of woman she was. Her success was firmly rooted in her Christian upbringing, her character, her assistance to others however she could and her support for her family first, church, and community.
Lucy will be greatly missed by her caring husband- Alpheus L. Jones; her loving and devoted daughters- Stacy Jones, North Chesterfield, VA and Alicia Jones, Henrico VA; her brother- Clifton (Annie) Wright, Richmond, VA; six sisters-in-law, Barbara, Mary, and Patricia Wright; Carrie Jones, Degora Tisdale, and Snow Ella Johnson; three brothers-in-law, Elmore and Gilbert Jones, Sr. and William Suber; four aunts- Phalinda, Ernestine, and Isabelle Feggins, and Shirley Wright; Godchildren- T. Maurice Jiggetts and Anjeanette Wright, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
