MRS. DORA JOYNER SEWARD affectionately called “Nick,” and her twin sister, Gloria, were born January 2, 1953 to the late James and the late Viola Davis Joyner. She was the youngest of seven children. Dora departed this life February 24, 2022 in Charlotte, NC after years of declining health following her suffering a stroke. She was cared for and nurtured to the end with her daughter and nurses by her side. She was also preceded in death by her husband- Charlie “Buck” Seward; brothers- James Johnson and Carl Joyner, and a sister- Lou Ann Smith.
At an early age she was baptized and joined Venture Grove Baptist Church, Bracey, VA.
Dora was a dedicated homemaker, wife, and mother. In her youth she was educated in Mecklenburg County Schools.
In 1969, she gave birth to her first-born child, which would be her only daughter. In her early twenties she moved to New York to live with her sister, Mary J. Starks. Upon returning to Virginia, she married Charlie Lewis Seward on January 22, 1973. She affectionately called him “Sweet Charlie Buck.” To that union, four sons were born. They were married for 44 years before his passing.
Dora had a strong passion for music and probably owned over 500 records. She had a beautiful singing voice and would break out a song anytime. She always encouraged her children to sing along and be happy in spirit. She loved dancing and her grandchildren especially found it entertaining. She loved spending time at home, having fun with family, and socializing with friends.
Dora leaves to cherish her memories, her daughter- Ivory Joyner of Charlotte, NC; four sons- Brian Seward of South Hill, VA; Walter Seward of Charlotte, NC; Patrick and Keith Seward of South Hill, VA; eight grandchildren; two sisters- Mary J. Starks and Gloria J. Pierce of Bracey, VA: one brother- Thomas Joyner, Bracey, VA, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
