Edgar Allen Young, Jr. was born on July 13, 1947 in Washington DC to late Edgar Allen Young, Sr. and Lelia (Rice) Young and departed this life on March 9, 2025 at his residence in South Hill, VA. He was affectionately known as Allen to everyone, and depending on when you met him, he might have been called “Funkybedbug.” He was the oldest of four children. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Larry Young.
Allen went to Anacostia Sr. High School and graduated in 1965. He enlisted in the United States Navy right after graduation and proudly served his country for four years doing two tours in the Vietnam war.
After leaving the Navy, he worked as a truck driver, mechanic, and worked for the Department of Energy until retirement. He married Christine Handon in 1973 and they had two children together. They later divorced in 1995. He never remarried.
Allen was a devoted family man. He loved his family and friends very much and was always willing to help people out in their time of need. He loved working on cars—or anything else he could get his hands on—and he loved chatting with anyone who would give him a few minutes to listen. He was an avid Washington Commanders football team fan. He always had a joke handy and kept an arsenal of funny memes, videos, or pictures in his phone to send to anyone and everyone—every single day.
Allen is survived by his two children- Keith Young and Kristal Young; grandchildren, Asya Young, Amaree Young-Fitzpatrick, and Lelia Young; great grandchild, Azhuri Young-Fitzpatrick; siblings, Steve (Carrie) Young and Cheryl “Khadijah” Young, and a host of relatives and friends.
May his memory and legacy continue on with those who had the honor of knowing such a remarkable man. He will be greatly missed.
