MRS. GERALDINE J. McKNIGHT, daughter of the late Benjamin and Willie Jefferson, was born July 7, 1938, in Washington, D.C. and departed this life February 19, 2026, surrounded by her children and grandchildren in Richmond, VA. She was preceded in death by her loving and devoted companion of 51 years - James “Pete” Crenshaw.
Geraldine dedicated her life to the Lord at an early age and was baptized at Trinity Episcopal Church. She later moved her membership to Bethel Memorial RZUA Church, where she faithfully served for over 60 years, until her health started to fail. Even then, she attended services as often as she could. She supported her church as a Missionary, Praise Dancer, and served with the Willing Workers and on the Hospitality Committee. Geraldine loved God and loved serving Him. Psalm 23 was her favorite scripture in the Bible.
Geraldine attended Mecklenburg County Public Schools.
She was employed by Aileen Factory for many years, until it closed. She loved to sew and make clothing, including outfits for her grandchildren. Geraldine later went to work at and retired from M & B Metals.
In her spare time, Geraldine enjoyed crocheting, crafting, praise dancing, and cooking. Her pies were her specialty; and everybody loved them. During the holidays, she would pack a deep freezer full of pies until she could distribute them throughout the family. Everyone loved receiving a care package of pies from Grandma Geraldine! She also had a green thumb and could get anything to grow. Her house (and yard) was always filled with beautiful flowers and plants.
The most important thing she loved to do was be with her family and feed them. She loved to have a house full of her children, their kids, and even their kids. After cooking for an army, she would sit back on the couch and take in all the laughter and love. She would love on her small grandchildren (and the big babies) and spoil them all! She spent her last day doing what she loved: being surrounded by her family, with lots of noise, laughter, and love.
Although she traveled with and visited her family out of town, her heart was always in LaCrosse, VA, and she never wanted to be away from home too long.
Geraldine leaves to cherish her memory her beloved six children - Oliver (Arline) Holmes and Benjamin Holmes, (Evone) of Richmond, VA; Tony Holmes, Sr., of South Hill, VA; Arnetta (Walter) Rogers, Vanessa (Roger) King, and Linda Gayles, all of Richmond, VA; 17 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.
