OBITUARY COLUMN

MR. DENNIS DEON SON, affectionately called “Checka”, brings an overwhelming warm feeling and joy. He had such a big heart and was always loving and willing to share with everyone that he encountered. He was the youngest of the family born to Sylvia Wilkins Son and the late Yves Son was born November 7, 1977 at Knud Hansen Hospital in St. Thomas U.S., Virgin Island.

At the age of twelve, he relocated to Maryland to stay with his big sister, Andrea Son Riley, one of his many siblings who adored their little brother. While there he attended Ridgecrest Elementary School, Hyattsville, MD and then Charles Carroll Middle School in New Carrollton, MD.

After spending so many years away, Dennis developed a longing to return to his beloved native Virgin Islands and to his mother. He continued his education at Bertha C. Boschulte Middle School and Ivanna Eudora Kean High School where he graduated.

When Dennis was not busy with furthering his education, he assisted his mother by working part-time in her 764 Design Beauty Supply business. It was only natural that upon graduation he decided to commit himself fully to the business. “I truly acknowledge that my son, Dennis, developed into a serious Business Manager and conducted business accordingly. I will forever be proud of him.”

Dennis was very smart, multifaceted, and talented young man who dabbled in several entrepreneurial pursuits. In 2010, he developed a love for music and created his own sound as a steady DJ at a night club in Smith Bay. He will always be remembered for the fun beats and good vibes.

Later he shifted gears and dabbled in construction work after Hurricanes Irma and Maria, in September of 2017. He decided to make a change and do something different, so he moved to San Antonio, TX, August of 2019, to attend Roadmaster truck driving school and earn his Commercial Driver’s License (CDL). He received numerous accolades while attending school and was liked by his fellow classmates and instructors. He got a job with Western Express Trucking Company and started May 2020. Starting out in Nashville, TN for orientation, Dennis drove hundreds of miles along the eastern seaboard and hauled various types of cargo. He had stops in Maine, Kentucky, and Pennsylvania to name a few places.

Unfortunately, the universe had other plans and he succumbed on July 27, 2020 in South Hill, VA. Dennis was a man of few words but possessed a great sense of humor and was loved by everyone who had an opportunity to meet him. He will be truly missed and his passing will forever leave a tremendous void in the hearts of his family and friends.

He leaves to mourn his mother, Sylvia Son, St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Island; two sisters- Andrea (Ellis) Riley, Bowie, MD and Shirley Malone, Port Orchard, Washington; four brothers- Owen (Treesa) Son, Hopewell, VA; Leston Stoutt and Wilfred Smith, St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Island, and Lincoln Son, Joint Base MDL, N.J.; one uncle- Josephus Wilkins; eight aunts- Lola Farrington, Rita Thompson, Orah Alexander, Ina Chalwell, Beverly Johnson, Dora Lettsome, Pricilla Maldonado and Alma Johnson; eleven nieces- Suehiler, Constancia and Dalia Smith, Lestina Stoutt, Kassandrea Son Brown, Quannisia and Keirra Son, Linnisa Springs, Christina Douglas, Sha’Niyah Son and Lanaiyah Crooke; ten nephews- Daniel and Deon Riley, Macadis and Diontae Smith, Leston Jr., and Jeannaton Leston Stoutt, Teon, Dantes, Zavier Carlisle and Roman Son; friends- Coki Beach Attendees and a host of cousins too numerous to mention.
