MRS. DOROTHY SUE WILKES MOORE was born August 14, 1937 in Brunswick County, VA and departed this life March 26, 2021 at Throgs Neck Rehabilitation Center, Bronx, NY. She was the third daughter of Cornelius James Wilkes and Sarah Rowlett Wilkes. Dorothy was a woman of strong and courageous faith. She became a member of Union RZUA Church, Meredithville, VA at an early age and remained a faithful financial contributor until her death. She was a proud graduate of James Solomon Russell High School in Lawrenceville, VA. It was in high school that she met and eventually married Clarence Lee Moore. To this union five children were born-four sons, Clarence, Jr., Joseph, Ronald Lee, and Michael; one daughter, Lawanda.

Upon moving to New York in 1968, Dorothy joined her sister, Mary, working in the garment district. She loved her job and quickly made many friends. Family was always at the center of Dorothy’s life. When her father’s health declined, she moved him from Virginia to New York to be with her and became his primary caretaker. She remained devoted to him until his demise. Dorothy loved her family with all her heart and her devotion to family captures the essence of her entire life.

In addition to her caring spirit, Dorothy had many gifts and talents, including hospitality and cooking. She welcomed people into her home with her beautiful smile and the sweet savory aroma from her kitchen. Her mastery in the kitchen meant guests were left with three things- a smile, a full stomach, and the blessing of a to-go plate. Nothing brought her more joy than preparing meals, serving those she loved (family and friends), and enjoying the fellowship that came with the experience Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents- James and Sarah Wilkes; a son, Ronald Lee; two sisters- Mary D. Edmonds and Sarah M. Thomas; six brothers- Joe Louis Wilkes, James Edward Wilkes, Jerry Henry Wilkes, Irby Lee Wilkes, William Bernard Wilkes, and Key Albert Wilkes.

She leaves to cherish many precious memories: three sons- Clarence Lee Moore, Jr., Plainfield, NJ; Joseph F. Moore, Flower Mound, TX, and Michael Anthony Moore, Bronx, NY; daughter- Lawanda Moore Castro, Bronx, NY; three grandsons, Christopher Moore, Philadelphia, PA; Wayne Moore, Sr., Norfolk, VA, and Eric Keith Castro, Jr., Bronx, NY; three great-grandchildren- Wayne Martin Moore, Jr., Shania Jo Moore, and Justin Moore, all of Chesapeake, VA; daughter-in-law, Jo A. Moore-Richard, Philadelphia, PA; one extremely supportive and loving son-in-law, Eric Castro, Sr., Bronx, NY; brother- Kenneth A. Wilkes, Emporia, VA; six sisters-in-law, Agnes Wilkes, Emporia, VA; Ann Wilkes, North Bergen, NJ; Annie Simmons, Compton, CA; Ethel Johnson, Kenbridge, VA; Clara M. Smith and Emma Staples, Brodnax, VA; a devoted and supportive niece, Paticea A. Thomas, Bronx, NY, who honored her like a mother, and a host of other nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends.

Peace I leave with you; my peace I give unto you.

Not as the world giveth, give I unto you.

Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.

John 14: 27
