OLIA MARY MAGALENE BARNES RUSSELL, affectionately called “Lola” and “LoLo”, was born December 26, 1924 in Mecklenburg County, VA to the late Tommie and Mary Mitchell Barnes. She entered into heaven on June 21, 2022 at Westport Rehabilitation and Nursing Center, Richmond, VA. She was also preceded in death by her siblings- William, Sol, Nathaniel, and Bernice Barnes.
At an early age she confessed Christ and was a member of the Greater Hayes Grove Baptist Church. Olia served as a Deaconess, a member of the Sunday School, Missionary, Senior Choir, and Pastor’s Aide until her health began to decline.
Olia was educated in the Mecklenburg County Public School System and continued her education to become a beautician. She worked at Jennie’s Beauty Shop for over 50 years. Lola along with Jennie Feggins and Louise Reese were instrumental in forming the BML Chapter of Beauticians (Brunswick, Mecklenburg, and Lunenburg Beauticians).
Olia was married to the late Deacon James Herman Russell.
Lola enjoyed a full blessed life doing the things that she loved such as serving God, gardening, cooking, making women hair look pretty, and spending time with family and friends.
Lola leaves to cherish her memories, one sister- Maria L. Russell of Richmond, VA; a sister-in-law- Mildred Hutcheson of Richmond, VA; four Godchildren- Fredrick Feggins, Robin and Todd Phillips, and Jennifer Best Decuir, and a host of special nieces and nephews, cousins, and friends.
