He was inducted into the United States Army and after serving for two years and fifteen days, received an honorable discharge. Upon his discharge, he enrolled in Virginia State College (now Virginia State University) in Petersburg, VA, and attended from 1945 to 1948. At this time, he relocated to New Jersey where he resided for the next 76 years.
Richard was always proud of the fact that he arrived in Newark, NJ in June 1948 on a Thursday and started a new job that following Monday. He worked for 45 years in the textile industry and was a supervisor for 22 years before retiring in 1991. He also worked part-time at DJ’s delicatessen in Newark, NJ for many years making delicious sandwiches for the community.
His dedication was also evident as a member of the New Hope Baptist Church in Newark, NJ. He joined New Hope in 1954 under the leadership of the late Reverend C. H. Walters. He served on the Usher Board and was appointed to the Trustee Board in 1971 where he served as a faithful trustee until his transition. He aided in the training of the Junior Trustees and also assisted with the New Hope Baptist Church rebuilding project in 1987.
Richard served as a bank depositor for the church for 18 years. He also held the position of Vice President with Northwest Developers, Non-Profit until three years ago. He continued to serve an important role with Northwest Developers, Non-Profit by assisting in approving invoices and signing checks until two days before his illness.
Richard was one of eight children born to the union of Wesley and Gertie. He is predeceased by three sisters- Dorothy Taylor Coleman, Eunice Taylor Wright, and Perlene Taylor Jones, and four brothers- Howard Taylor, Robert Taylor, Clyde Taylor, and Harold Taylor.
He is survived by a host of nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, great-great nieces and nephews, great-great-great nieces and nephews, cousins, other family members, and an abundance of friends who were like his family.
