VIRGIE ELIZABETH GOODE BROOKS, affectionately called “Cake”, daughter of the late Gust and Laura Bell Simmons Goode was born January 15, 944 in Mecklenburg County, VA and departed this life August 26, 2025, in VCU-MCV Hospital, Richmond, VA. She was also preceded in death by her eldest son- Elvis Brooks, Jr.; siblings- Mahalia Carter, Adabell Boswell, Virginia Goode Hayes, Mary Bouldin, Irene Goode and Delorise Goode; daughter-in-law, Annabell Woodson.
At an early age she was baptized and joined Venture Grove Baptist Church; where she was a faithful member until her health declined. She attended Mecklenburg County Public Schools.
Virgie was employed at Ben’s Café in Kenbridge, VA for six years as well as the Tobacco Warehouse, in Kenbridge, VA for five years. She also shared cropped tobacco for many years in South Hill, VA until she became disabled.
Virgie’s favorite hobbies were fishing with her sisters and playing cards with her family. Her favorite gospel songs were- “One Day At A Time” and “Beside Mother,” by Willie Banks.
She was married to the late Alexander Brooks and years later she became the common law wife of the late Arthur Thomas Woodson and to this union eight children were reared.
Virgie is survived by seven children- Silvia (Kevin) Bennett of South Hill, VA; Pattie Goode of Minneapolis, MN; Irvin Woodson of Boydton, VA; Marvin Woodson of Wilmington, DE; Kelvin (Tammy) Woodson and Teressa Woodson, all of Minneapolis, MN, and Sherwin (Stephanie) Woodson of South Hil, VA; daughter-in-law- Tammy Brooks of Newark, NJ; 17 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; 5 great-great-grandchildren; one sister- Beatrice Baskerville of LaCrosse, VA. She will also be missed by a loving and devoted friend for over 40 years who gave her the nickname “Cake”, James Shearin; other devoted friends- Edward Lee Walker, Michael Teal, and Melvin Green, whom she fondly called “Brother-in-law,” and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other friends.
