Edward R. Washington was born in Uriah, Alabama on August 18, 1936, to the late Minnie Mae Washington Lynch and Andrew Washington. On Saturday, January 9, 2021, God called Edward to his eternal resting place.
Edward graduated from Washington High School in 1955 and attended Washington Jr. College, in Pensacola, Florida. He served in the United States Army from November 16, 1956 to January 14, 1958, receiving an Honorable discharge. During the Civil Rights Movement he worked as an Insurance Agent for Atlanta Life Insurance Company in Montgomery, Alabama under the supervision and mentorship of the legendary Civil Rights Activist, Mrs. Johnnie Carr. In 1962, his fiancé, the late Hattie Elmore Washington moved to Rome, Georgia to accept a teaching position and he followed her. He became employed at General Electric on January 6, 1964 and remained there until his retirement on October 31, 1993. Edward was the Owner/Operator of Washington Fence Company for over 45 years. Also known as “Fence Man”, he took great pride in his business and trained many residential and commercial fence entrepreneurs, that are still in business today.
Edward was a devoted member of Lovejoy Baptist Church where he served on the Laymen’s Board, Male Chorus and Mass Choir, Community Emergency Response Team (CERT), Summer Explosion Camp Assistant and Cub Scout Den Leader. Outside of his service to his church, his greatest pleasure was deep sea fishing with his longtime friends and family members.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter, Reva Yvette Washington, a son, Ronald Williams, a brother, Arthur Lorenzo Washington, an ex-wife, Barbara Stevenson Washington, and his children’s mother and ex-wife, Hattie Elmore Washington.
He leaves to cherish his memory, two daughters, Rhonda W. Houser (George), Rome, GA and Roslyn D. Washington, Tampa, FL; one son, Rodney R. Washington, Montgomery AL; one step-daughter, Gail S. Veal, Rome, GA; two step-sons Harlan Stevenson (Dana), and Darryl Stevenson, both of Rome, GA. Grandchildren, Jordan E. Dansby, Lauren K. Houser, Leah G. Houser, Jamie Fortenberry, Tiffany Lambert, Kelly Burge, Holly Veal, Daramis Stevenson, Christopher Stevenson, and Payton Stevenson. Three brothers, Clarence B. Lynch, Pensacola FL, Alfonso Lynch, Hoffman Estates, IL, and Jimmie R. Lynch, Pensacola FL. Great-grandchildren and a host of family and friends, also cherish his memory.
Graveside Services for Mr. Edward Ronald Washington will be Monday, January 18, 2021 at 3 pm at Floyd Memorial Gardens (Hwy 411 ).
*Public viewing for Mr. Washington will be Sunday, January 17, 2021 from 11 am until 6 pm and Monday, January 18, 2021 from 10 am until 2 pm at the Funeral Home. (Mask Required)
