Obituary For Lee Esther Charles

OPELOUSAS – Funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 2, 2025 at Ford and Joseph Funeral Home in Opelousas, LA for Mrs. Lee Esther Major Charles, 71, who entered eternal rest on Sunday, July 13, 2025 in Lafayette, LA. Interment will be held in St. Leo the Great Cemetery in Leonville, LA.

Overseer Freddie Riley will be officiating the funeral service.

Mrs. Charles’ memories are being cherished by: her husband, John Charles of Leonville, LA; four sons, Kenneth Major of Sunset, LA, Micheal Charles of Leonville, LA, Jessie Charles of Houston, TX and Jonathan (Mayumi) Charles of Chula Vista, CA; two daughters, Shantelle Champagne of Broussard, LA and Nicole Dixon (Mike) of Rayne, LA; one brother, Charlie Riggs of Arnaudville, LA; four sisters, Barbara Reed and Vergie Sam (Doris), both of Leonville, LA, Caroline Riggs of Arnaudville, LA and Joy Riggs of Lafayette, LA; one uncle, Joseph C. Major of Port Barre, LA; three aunts, Shirley Mae Major (also her Godparent) of Leonville, LA, Mary M. Thomas and Audrey Rayme, both of Houston, TX; nineteen grandchildren; host of great grandchildren; two Godchildren, Jacob Reed of Leonville, LA and Gary Levier of Opelousas, LA; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

She is preceded in death by: her parents, Clarence Reed and Lee Hester Major; one son, Jamie Charles; seven brothers, Cleveland Reed, Lawrence Reed, John Reed, Norman Major, Francis Major, Joseph M. Reed, Joseph Reed and Gerald Reed; and four sisters, Shirley Johnson, Shirley Riggs, Clara Riggs and Sheryl Riggs.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, August 2, 2025 from 8:00 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. at Ford and Joseph Funeral Home.
