Show me the way, Not to fortune and fame, Not how to win laure’s Or praise for my name‒ But Show me The Way To spread “The Great Story” That Thine is The Kingdom And Power and Glory.” Helen Steiner Rice
On Tuesday, April 7, 2020, William Ashmay Duncan Jr., a loving husband and father of three children, passed away at the age of 59.
William was born on September 22, 1960 in Lafayette, LA to William and Joyce (Spencer) Duncan. He was a career Army retiree of 26 years and the founder of his legacy, Ashmay Seeds of Abraham, a nonprofit dedicated to equipping people with resources to thrive. He received his Bachelor of Human Resources from DeVry University in 2007 and Master of Human Resources from DeVry University in 2012.
Where there is love . . . The heart is light. Love makes the heart take “wingless flight”
On August 18, 1984, he married Paula Faye Adams Duncan. They raised two daughters, Aundrietta and Cherrelle. More so, they displayed an immeasurable love and partnership so deep that inspired countless couples. They were a match truly made in heaven.
Nothing in life that is worthy Is ever too hard to achieve If you have the courage to try it And you have the Faith to believe . . .. There’s nothing God cannot do, So start out today with Faith in your heart And “climb ‘til your dream comes true”!
At the age of 17, William was faced with a decision to enroll at Xavier on a music scholarship or enlist in the military. He chose to serve his country and that was the beginning of a long life of public service. Not only did he enlist thousands of individuals in the military, he shaped lives for the better by providing alternate routes and access to opportunity. The State of Louisiana’s military system mourns.
He continued his career as a Human Resource professional for education and oil companies, often leading great individuals to long careers. While work was important, his family and service activities brought him joy and fulfillment.
William was also passionate about photography and learning, often educating himself on film techniques and digital software. He enjoyed golf and spending time with his children, wife, and closest friends. He loved attending Saints games, movie dates with his Hunny, and grilling for friends and family. The self- proclaimed King of McComb was a comforter for many, always ready with a warm hug in times of crisis. He was a trustworthy and dependable man on whom you could count for anything.
Before his passing, he served as a member of the Pride of Lafayette #240 AF&AM, served as a member of the Kiwanis Club, served as a photographer for his church, Gethsemane Church of God in Christ, as well as the First Jurisdiction of Louisiana. His dream was fulfilled in November 2019, when he served, alongside his family and friends, homeless men and women through his newly founded nonprofit, Ashmay Seeds of Abraham.
The more he gave, The more he got The more he laughed, The less he fret‒ The more he did unselfishly, The more William lived abundantly . . .
William was preceded in death by his father, William Sr. and his mother, Joyce. He is survived by his wife Paula, his three children, Jessica of Kusal, Germany; Aundrietta (Christopher) and Cherrelle, all of Houston, TX; his brother Kevin of Lafayette, LA; like-a-brother Shedrick Figaro of Avondale,LA; best friends, Ricky Knight (Nancy) and Rodney White (Glenda) of Lafayette, LA; grandson, Cohen Saint Paul Broussard, several cousins and 7 God children.
O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting? But thank God! He gives us the victory over sin and death through our Lord Jesus Christ. – I Corinthians 15:55-57
A private service will be held on Friday, April 10, 2020. The family will host a celebration of life on September 19th, his 60th birthday weekend, for all family and friends to attend. In lieu of flowers, they ask that you consider making a donation to his final legacy, his nonprofit, Ashmay Seeds of Abraham. All cards and plants can be mailed to their home. Please contact Cherrelle Duncan at AshmaySeedsofAbraham@gmail.com for their address.
