Uncle Willie, you were much more than an uncle to me. You were the brother I never had. I'm so very grateful for all the love, care, encouragement, and support that you gave me. Words cannot express the love that I have for you. Thank you for allowing me to tag along with you when you went to play basketball and football. You were the one who got me interested in sports and the one who was instrumental in me playing sports. Thank you for showing me how to treat girls in a respectful manner. Thank you for showing me how to love family - even when family might not have been behaving in a loving way. Thank you for showing me how to be a good friend. Thank you for showing me how to bond with neighborhood brothers. Thank you for showing me how to respect my elders. During my youth, you and I spent many days together. Not one time did you complain (or if you did, you never let me hear you complain). Those times with you are some of the ones that I will treasure forever. Those times with you were some of the most instrumental of my life. One of my best memories of us is our trip to New York when I was 13. That trip was a gift for you from Aunt Johnnie Mae; but, you brought me along with you. And, what a time we had. That summer was one of my favorite summers of my lifetime. I will never forget the laughter that we shared during the Greyhound bus ride to New York and back (We met some really interesting people during our travel, I might say). Even though life kind of happened and we didn't get to spend as much time together when I moved away from Tifton as an adult, you still were giving love, guidance, support, and encouragement through the phone lines. Being away from home is tough - especially when you're thousands of miles away. But, hearing your soothing, confident, loving, and encouraging voice helped me to get through some difficult times. I'm so very grateful that God blessed me with such a loving, caring, understanding, supportive (I can go on and on) uncle as you. I can't wait to see you again On That Day when we sing songs of glory with Grandma, Granddaddy, and the rest of our family members in Heaven with Jesus. I love you.
