Obituary For Kenneth Scissum, Sr.

The life of Kenneth Edwin Scissum Sr. began on January 22, 1945 in Attalla, Alabama to the late Arthur and India Scissum. He departed his life peacefully at his home on October 10, 2021 with his family by his side.

Kenneth was one of twelve children born to the union of Arthur and India Scissum. He was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and India Scissum; wife, Eulaine Ross Scissum; three sisters, Annie Joe Treadwell, Midren Scissum Duckett, and Bennett Scissum Muse; and six brothers, Arthur Scissum Jr., Artimus Scissum, Haywood Scissum, Adolph Scissum, James Scissum, and Willard “Maurice” Scissum .

Kenneth was raised in Attalla, AL and was educated in the Attalla Public School System. Kenneth graduated from Norris High School where he was a member of the Class of 1963. After High School, Kenneth attended Kentucky State and Alabama A&M where he played football. Upon his father's illness, he returned home and became employed with Republic Steel. Kenneth was employed with Republic Steels for approximately 35 years until his retirement. Upon his retirement, Kenneth attended Gadsden State Community College where he took up Carpentry.

Kenneth also had the privilege of serving on the City Council for District 1 for a total of three terms. He loved working at the Steel Plant and serving as the City Councilman for District 1 in his beloved city of Attalla. Both jobs provided him the opportunity to meet new people and develop lifelong friendships. While attending Alabama A & M, Kenneth met and later married his college sweetheart, Eulaine Ross Scissum. They were married for 38 years until her death and from this union, three loving and devoted children were born: Kimberly, Kenneth "Ed", and Keith.

Kenneth confessed his life to Christ at an early age at Mt. Zion Baptist Church where he has been a lifelong member. While being a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church, Kenneth served in the capacities of a deacon, Sunday School Teacher, and a member of the Male Chorus. He remained a faithful member of Mt. Zion until his failing health.

Kenneth was a very friendly, compassionate, loving, caring, supportive person, who loved his family and friends. He was an outgoing person with a pleasing personality who never met a stranger. Kenneth was affectionately known as “Big Sid” with an infectious laugh that was like none other. His number one treasure in life was spending time with his family. His children were his pride and joy and he would give the world for them. He often would share stories about his children and grandchildren to anyone who had a listening ear.

He leaves to cherish his loving memories and legacy: his daughter, Kimberly (Eddie) Goldsby; two sons, Kenneth (Crystal) Scissum, Jr., and Keith (Tiffany) Scissum, Sr.; adorable grandchildren who were the apple of his eye, Lalia Eulaine Scissum, Keith “KJ” Scissum, Jr., Kenneth “Tripp” Scissum III, Kaetlyn “Katie Mae” Eulaine Scissum; and Genesis Strong; one sister, Loretta (George) Baker; one brother, John (Mary) Scissum; sisters-in-law, Jeanette Scissum Mickens, Deborah Jenkins Scissum, Mattie Scissum, Gayle Scissum, Doris Ross, and Doris Pumphrey; brothers-in-law, Olin (Rose) Ross and Willie James; nieces who were more like sisters, Bea Treadwell Freeman, Sandra Graham, and Nona Rogers; lifelong friends, James Oden, Bernard “BA” Corbin, Mike and Mary Keenan, John and Marilyn Carroll, Percy Hall; and a host of nieces, nephews, and other beloved relatives and dear friends.
