Lola Mae acquired her education in the Atlanta Public School system. She graduated from Howard High School in 1946 where she was an outstanding majorette in the marching band.

In January 1946,, she entered into holy matrimony with the late James E. Usher. To this union, six children were born. She was preceded in death by three children, Bornetta Usher, Charles Usher, and Lamar Usher, a sister, Alberta Hall, and a nephew, Cecil Gates, Sr.
