Lt. Col (Ret) Burnett Peters Jr of Hampton, VA passed away September 10th, 2025. He was born in Parkersburg WV in 1929. He excelled academically, graduating from Sumner High School before matriculating at Howard University where he earned a bachelor’s degree. During his time at Howard, served as School of Liberal Arts, Senior Class President. He later earned master’s degrees from the University of Southern California and George Washington University. Burnett retired from the US Air Force after 20 years of dedicated service as an AF Navigator accumulating over 2,000 flying hours and was a Vietnam War Veteran. After the USAF, he was employed at Hampton Institute (University) as Head of the Emergency School Assistance Program. He retired a second time from NASA Langley Research Center where he served as Chief of the Scientific and Technical Programs, Chief of the Management Support Division and Director for the Office of Equal Opportunity Programs. He was a civic minded member of the Hampton community, having served as a Board Member of Langley Federal Credit Union, Vice-Chairman on the Board of Zoning Appeals for the city, President, American Heart Association Hampton Roads and was Big Brother/Big Sister of the Year, Tidewater VA. Burnie was a member of Gideons International, Les Hommes Civic and Social Club Inc., Life Member of the NAACP and a Charter Member of the Tuskegee Airman Inc, Hampton VA Chapter. He was a Life Member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc., mostly in Zeta Omicron Chapter. Burnie is survived by his children, Col.(Ret) Burnett Peters III (Jeanne), Karen Peters Hughes, Jean Hembrick (Bruce) & June Stokes (Terry); grandchildren, Lt. Col. (USMCR)Burnett Peters IV (Ashley), Meredith Peters (Nick), Jaclyn Stokes, Ashley Hembrick, Brittany Hembrick, Terry Stokes, PO2 (USNR)Spencer Peters, Joseph Peters; great grandchildren, William Peters, Audrey Peters, Evelyn Peters, James Masterson; nieces, Deborah Howard, Elease Howard, Roslyn Holsey (David). Burnie was preceded in death by wife, Dr. Betty Howard Peters, parents, Burnett Peters Sr. and Catherine Peters, stepmother, Maude Peters. The Memorial Service will be held Saturday October 18, 2025, 10AM at First Baptist Church-Hampton 229 N King St. Hampton VA 23669. The family will receive friends, Friday October 17, 2025, at Bethel AME Church 2521 N. Armistead Ave, Hampton VA 23666, 5:00-7:30. The Omega Psi Phi Service will be at 6:00, the Tuskegee Airman Service at 6:30 & Les Hommes Service at 7:00 during visitation hours.
