Camilla M. Hicks, 85, of Springfield, Virginia departed this life on March 21, 2026.She was born on September 22, 1940, in Bartley, West Virginia, to the late Harry E. Monroe, Sr. and Julia Frances Howard Monroe. She graduated from Excelsior High School in 1958 and, that same fall, enrolled at West Virginia State College (now WVSU), where she earned a B.S. in Biology.
During her time in college, Camilla became a proud member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated. It was also there that she met the love of her life, Howard G. Hicks, Jr. The two were united in marriage in June, 1962, beginning a devoted partnership that would span nearly 49 years. From this union, their beloved son, Howard A. Hicks, was born.
Together, Camilla and Howard built a life rich in love, adventure, and travel. Their journeys took them across the globe-from the Philippines to Algeria-creating cherished memories and stories that could fill several books. In 2011, Camilla experienced the profound loss of her husband, a loss she carried with grace and strength.
Camilla was a free spirit and had a zest for life. She has been described as “spunky”. Her radiant smile could brighten any room. She had a deep appreciation for the arts, yet she loved violent movies and westerns. As an artist, she found joy in oil painting and quilting, and she nurtured a lifelong love of reading. She was an active and dedicated member of the Springfield Acres Garden Club, where she had served as president and earned numerous awards for her contributions.
Camilla also enjoyed entertaining her French ladies' group. Although she could barely speak the language, she could still engage in the conversations. Camilla treasured time spent with friends, often enjoying lunches, movie dates, and Greenland day trips. She took immense joy in traveling to visit her son and his family wherever they were posted around the world. She loved hearing stories of her grandchildren's shenanigans.
A woman of deep and abiding faith, Camilla was a devoted member of St. Christopher Episcopal Church. She was a greeter and created beautiful floral arrangements for the church. Fellow parishioners fondly anticipated her delicious, sweet treats, and she gave generously of her time in service to others.
Camilla leaves to cherish her memory her loving son, Howard A. “ Tony” (Kimberly) of Burke, Virginia; her adored grandchildren, Ashleigh Hicks and Mia Hicks of Burke, Virginia, and Christopher Hicks of Falls Church, Virginia; her sisters, Carol Glenn of Youngstown, Ohio, and Connie Monroe of Dundalk, Maryland; her brothers, Harry E. Monroe, Jr. (Kim) of Fayetteville, North Carolina, and Francis “Jinx” Monroe (Ethel) of Decatur, Georgia; her special nephew, Shawn Monroe of Baltimore, Maryland; her special nieces Candace Jackson (Brian) of Girard, Ohio and Lia Penty (Russell) of San Diego, California; along with a host of beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.
