My dear friend Jerald was more than just my manager at DCCK—he was a guiding force in my journey. Though he carried a stern presence, it always came from a place of care and respect. He showed his kindness in so many ways, from preparing dishes for me and my family on Thanksgiving to personally visiting my food pantry to celebrate my success. I will forever cherish our conversations, his encouragement, and the genuine support he gave. His impact on my life is lasting, and his memory will always hold a special place in my heart.
I met Jerald back in 2007 when I accompanied my daughter to DCCK to volunteer for her high school service hours. She only went one time fulfilling her hours but as her Dad, I was enthralled by the people, mission, and vision DCCK embodied by people like Jerald. I recall our first day as a volunteer: unsure, a bit intimidated being in a commercial kitchen. At the 2nd and D st location, Jerald appeared to greet and brief the volunteers. His explanations of our roles and DCCK's mission exhibited his warmth and also command of his kitchen. He was a great teacher: stepping in to correct a volunteer or staff member on correct procedures and it was obvious through his humility he never forgot where he came from or his current successful station through his long journey to be a great leader respected man. I will miss him and will always carry the memories who I met too infrequently but taught me a great deal in those moments.
