Mary Catherine Macmillan
Mary Catherine was born on May 8,1946, in Alexandria, Virginia, to Ernestine Williams and Henry Walker, Jr. In childhood she lived on Oronoco Street in Oldtown, the eldest of five siblings in the Williams family. She attended Lyles Crouch Elementary School and enjoyed playing in the neighborhood with friends, having many adventures and misadventures with them. She started high school at Parker Gray, the Black high school in Alexandria, then moved to D.C. when her mother and siblings left the City for the District. In late 1964 she moved with her father and step-mother, Annie Ruth Walker, to the Bailey’s Crossroads area in Fairfax County. She graduated from J.E.B. Stuart (now Justice) High School in 1965 in the first group of Black students to integrate the school.
Following high school Mary Catherine began working, holding jobs in the Federal Government, including the U.S. Patent Office in Arlington. By the early 1970’s she moved back to Alexandria with the Walker family and got her own apartment with her daughter, Andrea Williams, on the West End. In 1975 she began a 30-year career as a Personnel Clerk for the City of Alexandria. She also met her future husband, William (Mac) Macmillan, with whom she had two sons, Michael and Oren Macmillan. Mary and William were married in 1977 and moved to Del Ray, where they remained.
Mary Catherine enjoyed reading, watching TV, and family gatherings on holidays and birthdays, as well as occasional longer trips for family reunions and to Washington State to visit the Macmillan family. In the 1990’s she became active in the Salvation Army and the Home League, where she enjoyed participating in many activities, including “flea markets” and summer camp. She continued to participate in Home League for many years after her retirement from the City of Alexandria in 2005.
Although Mary Catherine’s health and mobility slowly declined during the past two years, she continued to enjoy seeing members of her extended family. She passed peacefully on Easter Sunday, April 5, 2026, with her husband and other family members at her side. Our thoughts and prayers are with you doing this difficult time of sorrow.
How can I say Goodbye Mary we shared so many memories in our lives young and old. I will love and miss you forever. You are not to be forgotten. My heart mourns with sadness. A sweetheart, loving person I miss you so much already. I'm so sad with memories that flood my heart, every night before I rest. It hurts to say Goodbye Caroline Walker Lipkins
Rest in peace my friend.
What an amazing impression Miss Mary made on my life. She was the bridge through many difficult teenage moments for me. I am grateful for her compassion and will be eternally grateful for her being my soft landing in many instances. To the family, I adore you, and pray your strength and comfort through your reflections. Her life will transcend time, and the pain that is felt, is love beating loud. Love and light. ~Tanya Galloway-White~
