Obituary
Terrance Reshone Taylor was born on July 22, 1966, in Mobile, Alabama. From a young age, Terrance exhibited a passion for service and advocacy, channeling his energies towards creating positive change while attending Portland State University (PSU). It was during his time at PSU that he met his loving wife Candace B. Ewell. Candace and Terrance married on January 7, 1995. Terrance completed his undergraduate education with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Morgan State University, a perfect complement to his passion for service.
Terrance was a dedicated and hardworking public servant whose career involved union organizing, community engagement and high-profile political campaigns. In 2001, he began working as a Special Project Liaison in the Office of Congressman David Price. Two years later, Terrance and Candace welcomed their loving son, Simon Taylor, into their family. That same year, Terrance began working in the Office of Congressman Steny Hoyer as a member of the district staff. Terrance remained with Congressman Hoyer’s office for the remainder of his career, becoming Congressman Hoyer’s District Director in 2019. In these roles, Terrance was a helpline for so many who didn’t know where or who else to turn to for help and support. His fervor for politics fueled a professional career that spanned decades and often was a catalyst for thoughtful and spirited debates with colleagues and friends alike.
Terrance had a deep appreciation for life and embraced a wide array of interests and hobbies that enriched both his life and those around him. A culinary enthusiast, he found joy in crafting delicious meals for family gatherings and cherished moments spent around the dining table with loved ones. His adventurous spirit and love of travel led him to numerous destinations throughout the country and around the world, providing him with rich cultural experiences that he often shared through animated storytelling. Passionate about reading, Terrance's literary appetites were diverse, ranging from history to contemporary politics. An avid lover of history, Terrance could often be found wandering through museum corridors, pondering the narratives of the past. These pursuits not only fulfilled him personally but also connected him with people who shared his zeal for engaged discussions and continuous learning.
Through it all, Terrance’s love of photography served him well in preserving precious memories and documenting both the big and small moments. Terrance played college football at Portland State University and is an inductee in PSU’s football Hall of Fame. In addition to his undergraduate degree in Political Science from Morgan State University, Terrance earned a Masters degree from Duke University with a focus on African and African American Studies. Terrance was also a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.
Terrance loved his whole family and took extra care to be available for his niece Rakaylah Rose Gordon. Terrance was preceded in death by his mother, Rosa Lee Neeley, and his sister, Tammy Flanagan. Terrance is survived by his wife Candace, his son Simon, and his father Cecil. He also leaves to cherish his memory siblings: Michael and his wife Kaawaloa, Charlie and his wife Angela, Elizabeth, Michael and his wife Natasha, Brenda Nelson (Taylor) and her husband Johnny, and Shantell Jones, as well as Cordell and Brenda. He is also survived by numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
Viewing services will be held for Terrance on Monday, July 21, 2025, from 9:30 am – 11:00 am, followed by a homegoing service at Alfred Street Baptist Church, located at 301 S Alfred St., Alexandria, VA 22314. A private interment will occur at Bethel Cemetery, 1300 Wilkes Street, Alexandria, VA 22314. In lieu of flowers, please donate to Morgan State University, Kappa Alpha Psi, or NAACP
Terrance, I'm a stranger, sitting at your feet on the wooden frame at your feet (sidewalk side). Not sure if you can tell from where you are right now, but you look like you were a jolly soul that left too soon. Maybe I'll see you on the other side, but if heaven is bright, snowy and cold (like Alaska), I think I'm headed to a more Florida-like-climate when it's my turn. Rest easy, Mr. Taylor. You deserve eternal peace.
Our entire family will miss your "personal" talks and advice. We love you and pray for your family.
Rest in peace Terrance. I will always cherish the loving memories that I have of you.
Cousin Terrance I'm sure gonna miss you fly high cousin
Our staff will continue to keep your family in our prayers. We thank you for allowing us to serve your family.
