Dr. William Lafayette Powell, Jr.
(December 21, 1957 – April 6, 2026) was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and physician who spent his life in devoted service to his family and community. Born in Eatonton, Georgia, to Reverend William and Mrs. Carrie Powell, Lafayette grew up in a home grounded in faith, love, and purpose. A scholar-athlete in his youth, he went on to graduate from Clark College (now Clark Atlanta University) and earn his medical degree from Morehouse School of Medicine, launching a medical career that would span over 40 years.
Lafayette dedicated his professional life to compassionate, comprehensive care for patients and families across every stage of life. He served patients across the metro Atlanta area at White Oak Family Practice, Piedmont Healthcare, First Plus Medical, and Berkeley Medical And Rehabilitation Center.
Lafayette's greatest joy was his family. He married the love of his life, Sheila, on July 28, 1990, and together they raised two daughters, Ariel and Jordan. They were blessed with two grandsons, Ade and Temi. He was a constant, present force in the lives of everyone he loved — showing up for the big moments and the small ones alike. In his leisure time, he enjoyed fishing, hunting, grilling, traveling, and cheering loudly for his beloved Georgia Bulldogs, Braves, Falcons, and Hawks.
His family is grateful for the many cherished memories and is confident that he is enjoying his heavenly rewards following a life of taking care of others. Well done, Lafayette.
Please join the family during the celebration of life ceremony on Tuesday, April 14 at 11am at Central United Methodist Church in Atlanta, GA. A viewing will be held at Grissom-Clark Funeral Home on Monday, April 13 from 12pm to 6pm. Family Hour will be from 5:00pm-6:00pm.
