Hsiu (Sue) Hsu Huang (黄徐秀), aged 90, passed away peacefully on Friday, February 20, 2026, surrounded by family. A woman with many birthdays, Sue lived many lives across her several years.
Born around 1935 in Beijing, China, Sue was only a few years old when the Second Sino-Japanese War commenced. While her father moved to southern China to fight the Japanese, Sue remained in Beijing with her mother and three siblings, where they lived under Japanese occupation for seven years. Eventually, the family decided to flee to the south and reunite with Sue’s father. However, southern China was also unsafe, and after only a few years the family relocated to Taiwan.
Later, Sue received a college education in Mathematics from National Taiwan Normal University. She spent two years teaching high school students throughout Taiwan, then received a scholarship to study Mathematics at a Master’s level at the University of South Carolina in 1958. It was there she met her ex-husband, Tze Jia (Tom) Huang, with whom she eventually had her daughter, Julie.
In the years that ensued, Sue moved to New York City and earned yet another master’s degree in Biostatistics from Columbia University. She transitioned between various jobs at pharmaceutical companies and ended her career as a biostatistician for Pfizer. In early 2022, Sue moved to Atlanta to live full-time with her daughter’s family. There, she became an integral part of the Kirkwood community, where she enjoyed attending her grandchildren’s sporting events and cheering for the Atlanta Braves.
Sue was active to the end and enjoyed traveling, ballroom dance, opera, and spoiling the family dogs, Milo and Siggy. For the last twenty years, Sue greatly enjoyed spending one month per year at her timeshare in Aruba. She will be remembered fondly by her family for her stomach of steel and her love for cherry pie.
Sue joins her mother, Yu-Ru Yang Hsu; father, Tso Chow Hsu; elder sisters, Su-Juan Hsu Liu and Shang Hsu Peng; and many friends in eternal peace. She is survived by her brother, Kuan Hsu, and his wife, Lien Shiang Ou Hsu; her sister, Chiang Hsu Wu; her daughter, Julie; her son-in-law, Doug; and her grandchildren, Marie, Elizabeth, and Sam. She will be missed deeply by neighbors and family alike.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 28, 2026 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, 636 W Ponce de Leon Ave, Decatur, GA 30030.
In 2022, Marie and Sue recorded a podcast with StoryCorps detailing Sue’s journey from Beijing to southern China. Use the link below to access the interview:
