John Wesley Wright, Sr.,was born on October 17, 1946 to the late William Wright Sr., and Rozell Wright in Camak, Georgia. he departed this life on November 17, 2007. John attended H.R. Butler Elementary School in Atlanta and David T. Howard High School. After graduation from High School he enlisted in the United States Air Force where he served four years and was honorably discharged. John's employment included the United States Post Office and Colonial Bakery.
John was baptized at Lithonia Baptist Church in Camak, Georgia. He moved to Reynoldstown and joined Saint Philip A.M.E. Church where he was active until his death. John served as Athletic Ministry president and was instrumental in organizing athletic teams at Saint Philip. He was the first ladie's softball team coach and his teams won many league championships. He also coached the men's softball teams and they did equally as well as the ladies. His real passion was sports for children and he got an opportunity to coach Saint Philip's boys' basketball team even before we had a gym. In addition to being Athletic Ministry President, John served on the John Pitts Usher Board and Steward Board Two.
John is most remebered by his siblings as the one in charge or the organizer. John always spearheaded family activities such as family reunions and outings and insisted that the family fall in line. He organized the Wright family Second Sunday dinner which is still going on.
John was preceded in death by his father, William Wright, Sr. He leaves to cherish his memories a loving and devoted wife, Margaret Wright. Five children: Jolie (James) Pearson, John (Kalecia) Wright, Jr., Stacie Friday, Jessica Wright, Malcolm (Michele) Hall; A caring mother, Rozell Wright; Nephew/son Phillip (Shelia) Wright; Six siblings: William (Patricia) Wright Jr., Frances (Sammy) Johnson, Henry (Evelyn) Wright, Rosie Austin, Thomas (Melissa) Wright, Bennie (Sharon) Wright; a brother-in-law, Guy Darnell; Eight grandchildren; James Pearson, Shantae Young, Jaquisha Pearson, John Wright,III, Jaci Wright, Mariah Hall, Monique Hall and Myles Hall. Two aunts: Emily McNeal and Lucille Wright and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins and friends.
John found strength and comfort in Psalm 91:
"He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the LORD, He is my refuge and my fortress, God, in Whom I trust. Surely He will save you from the fowler's snare and from the deadly pestilence. He will cover you with His feathers, and under His wings you will find refuge; His Faithfulness will be your shield and rampart. You will not fear the terror of night, nor the arrow that flies by day, nor the plague that destroys at midday. A thousand may fall at your side, ten thousand at your right hand, but it will not come near you." Psalm: 1-7
