Obituary For Kenneth Alston

Mr. Kenneth Alston passed Sunday, January 12, 2014.

Memorial service for Mr. Kenneth L. Alston will be held Saturday, February 1, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. in Oakhurst Presbyterian Church, 118 2nd Ave., Decatur, Georgia 30030.

Kenneth Lamar Alston was born on November 4, 1941 to the late Mr. George and Mrs. Pauline Alston in Cleveland, Ohio. He was the fifth of eleven children. He loved his brothers and sisters deeply.

He attended East Cleveland High School. At age 19 he moved to New York City where he lived with Ruth and Lynwood Alston. There he met his wife of 50 years, Harriet Baldwin Alston. During their union three girls, Paula, Adria and Kentria were born.

He began his career as a Heating Ventilation Air Conditioning (HVAC) engineer at the Americana Hotel in New York City. He volunteered his professional talent to many who needed his help. He never allowed anyone to his knowledge go without heat or air especially the elderly in our community. For many years he kept the heating and air running in this very church. He was highly respected and regarded in his professional circle. He retired from DeKalb County after a long career as a HVAC engineer.

He had a love for jazz music, gadgets, cooking and fishing. He was an artist, painter and photographer. Despite the fact that his family lived in different part of the United States, he would travel long and far to make sure they were okay.

Kenneth was known for giving the children in the family nicknames. He started with one of his oldest nieces Sharon who is known as Scurby. So, you know he had to give nicknames to his grandchildren who he affectionately called Brandee, Pepper, Whoopie, Peaches, Beaujo, Happy and Sparky.

Kenneth known to his family as Kool Breeze had a sense of humor that only people with thick skin could handle. He was a fighter until the very end.

His father, mother, and sisters, Lorleli and Marcia preceded him in death.

He is survived by wife, Harriet Baldwin Alston; daughters, Paula Alston, Adria (Rico) Wheeler and Kentria (Tony) Brown; five sisters, Pearl Calhoun (CA), Sandra Whitfield (OH), Elaine Smith (GA), Pauline Lemons (OH), and Denise Upchurch (OH); three brothers, Lynwood Alston (OH), George Alston (CA) and Gregory Alston (OH); six grandchildren, Brandee Wheeler, John Alston Stribbling, Alden Wheeler, Jr., Ian Brown, Avery Brown, and Aamar Wheeler and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins other relatives and friends who are left to continue to celebrate his life.
