On January 25, 2016, God called home His nurse of the year, an honorable servant Mrs. Dora Lee Chatmon Brooks home. Dora was born on May 14, 1937 in Atlanta, Georgia to the late Mr. Elder Chatmon and Mrs. Jennie V. Jones Chatmon. Dora professed her faith in Christ at an early age. She joined Shy Temple C.M.E. Church in the 1960s where she served on the Lay Council, and as a faithful choir member including many other ministries.
Dora, Ms. Sweet as she was affectionately called was a highly educated lady, who truly believed in academic excellence. Dora received her primary education in the Atlanta Public Schools System. Her secondary education was completed at Booker T. Washington High School. She continued her higher education at George Washington Carver, Paine College, Dekalb Community College, Georgia State, Medical College of Georgia and University of Georgia where she attained her Bachelors of Science and her Master Degree in Nursing. Dora was a civil rights activist that marched with the late Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on several occasions. Her godfather and mentor was the late great Dr. Benjamin E. Mays, former Morehouse president and icon, who encouraged her to peruse her passion in nursing. Dora also started her own business in the early 1980s, Beautiful Windows by Mrs. Sweet, where she indulged her creative side of decorating and design.
Mrs. Dora Brooks administered her passion servicing the health community at Grady Memorial Hospital, Glenwood Manor, Georgia Mental Health, Georgia Regional Hospital and Dekalb Board of Health, where she held administrative positions. She retired from Fulton County Board of Health where she was nominated and awarded nurse of the year. One of the proudest accolades. Her most fulfilling role of a lifetime was teaching nursing at Atlanta Area Technical college, where she inspired many students to higher education and medical positions. It was a hallmark of pride for her to mentor so many. Mrs. Dora Lee Chatmon Brooks was preceded in death by her father, Mr. Elder Chatmon, mother, Mrs. Jennie V. Jones Chatmon, Brother Willie Lawrence (Duke) Chatmon, sister, Eloise Chatmon, son Jasper Brooks, Jr., son-in-law, Goldie M. Eubanks III, grandsons, Xavier Roach and Dontavious Brooks.
She leaves to cherish her loving memories her husband and love of her life of fifty-one years, Mr. Jasper Brooks, Sr.; sister, Ossia Shug (Calvin Sr.) Whitehead, sister-in-law; Cornelia Good Culpepper; children, Crystal (Goldie III) Brooks- Eubanks and and a host of other relatives and friends.
