Obituary For Mr. Charlie W. Taylor

Mr. Charlie W. Taylor of Atlanta passed.

Celebration of life for Deacon Charlie W. Taylor will be held Thursday, July 10, 2014 11:00 am at St. Paul Miss. Baptist Church, Rev. Dr. Clayton E. Taylor, Pastor., officiating. Interment, Friday, July 11, 2014, Georgia National Cemetery (Full Military Honors). Remains in state 9:30 a.m.

Visitation Wednesday, July 9, 2014 from 12-9p.m. Kadash Ceremony 7-8p.m. will be performed by Atlanta Consistory #24-A. By orders of the Venerable Grand Commander, Zawadi Allen, 32°, all qualified Scottish Rite Masons are asked to assemble at 6:30 pm for Kadash Services. The Last Rites will be performed by Plymouth Rock Lodge #86 at Grissom-Clark Funeral Home, 227 East Lake Dr. (at Memorial Dr.) 404-373-3191 www.grissom-clarkfh.com.

Charlie Will Taylor was born in Albany, Georgia on August 24, 1927 to the late Isaac and Katie Taylor. He departed this life on July 4, 2014 at Atlanta Medical Center South.

He graduated from Monroe High School with the Class of 1948.

At an early age, he accepted Christ and joined Friendship Baptist Church in Albany, GA. Upon moving to Atlanta, he united with 2nd Mt. Zion Baptist Church. In 2002, he joined St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church in East Point, GA. He has served as a deacon in ministry for 34 years. A bible scholar, deacon would “discuss” the word at length with all who would listen and want to learn.

Charlie served in the military (Army) for 22 years. During this time, one of his most important assignments was in the 3rd Regiment. As a part of the Old Guard, Charlie was the first Black to guard the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, the White House, personal residence of the Chief of Staff and served at military funerals during the presidency of President Dwight David Eisenhower. He was also an advisor to the Ethiopian Army during the reign of Haile Selassie.

In 1997, Charlie Taylor was united in matrimony to Willie M. Hicks.

He was a member of the Board of Directors of the Joseph B. Whitehead Boys and Girls Club. He also served as a mentor to the children of the boys and girls club and the children of Venetian Hills Elementary School. Mr. Taylor received many honors and community awards too numerous to mention.

Mr. Taylor was active in the Masonic Order with affiliation memberships of Plymouth Rock Lodge #86, Gate City Chapter #9 HRAM (PHP), St. John Commandery #4 KT (HPEC), Atlanta Consistory #24-A, and Atlanta Commander’s of The Rite (President). Brother Taylor received the highest honor by coronation on October 12, 1992 as a 33rd Degree Mason, the last and highest degree within Prince Hall Freemasonry.

He leaves to cherish his memory, a loving and devoted wife, Willie Taylor; 3 sons, Charles (Jamie) Taylor, Larry Jester, Emmanuel (Shirley) Jester; special godson, Johnny Jackson; 8 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; 3 great-great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
