Jahi Adu Mbwana, born Darron Renard Betts, was born June 30, 1963 in New Orleans Louisiana to Isaac and Dorothy Betts. He grew up in Baton Rouge Louisiana and graduated from Capitol Senior High in 1981. During his high school years he was a star center on the varsity basketball team. After graduating high school, Jahi attended Southern University. In 1983 Jahi joined the U.S. Marine Corps Reserves. He served for four years with the M.O.S. 0311. After being honorably discharged, Jahi moved to Atlanta GA in 1988. He continued his education at the American College for the Applied Arts where he earned a B.A. in fashion design and met his future wife. Jahi took great pride in his knowledge of computer systems and spent most of his adult life working as an IT specialist. He was preceded in death by his brother, Mark Jeffrey Betts. Jahi will be remembered for his love of the New Orleans Saints, contagious laugh and off beat sense of humor, which he passed on to his children. Jahi leaves to honor his memory his loving wife, Marva Mbwana; his three children, Constance Whitfield, Halima Mbwana and Kwasi Mbwana; his parents, Isaac and Dorothy Betts; siblings, Linda Ruffin and Rodney Keith Betts; one grandchild, Paiton Smith and a host of aunts and uncles, nieces and nephews, cousins and friends.
