Obituary For Mr. Wilbur Hightower

Mr. Wilbur Hightower passed. Celebration of Life will be held Tuesday, March 26, 2019 at 11:00 am at Central United Methodist Church 501 Mitchell Street SW Atlanta GA 30314. Interment will follow at Westview Cemetery. Remains in state 9:30am.

Wilbur Hightower was born on October 29, 1945, in Griffin, Georgia, to the late John Henry and Inez Hightower. He was the second oldest of five siblings – Bobbie, Betty, Dorothy, Marian and Harold. God called him home on March 19, 2019. Wilbur’s Christian journey began at an early age. He joined Archaia Baptist Church and taught Sunday school. He later became a member of Jackson Memorial Baptist Church in Atlanta. After graduating from Fairmont High School in 1963, Wilbur joined the U.S. Army. Later, he started a career with the U.S. Postal Service as a Mail Handler which lasted 34 years until his retirement in 2001. Not being one to sit around and do nothing, he joined the Atlanta Braves as a Ticket Taker where he shared his love of people. In 1983, Wilbur married Deborah Johnson and from their union Alexis Patrice Hightower was born. Not content to be a dad who simply brought in the money, he accompanied Alexis to school daily and ensured that she made it home safely after school. Wilbur had a helping heart and was seen by many as an angel in disguise, a servant. Even after he left the Atlanta Braves, he could often be found standing on his porch meeting and greeting anyone who passed by. He was the one who neighbors, friends and relatives called when they needed carpenters, auto mechanics, roofers, or just keeping an eye on their homes. He showed them that he had a listening ear and cared for them. To many he was known as “ the man on the porch”. Wilbur was preceded in death by his sisters Betty Griggs-Bowden and Marian Parks and his brother Harold Hightower. He is survived by his wife Deborah Hightower; daughters Alexis Hightower, Kristie Hightower, Shonda Hightower, Monica Brown(Andre), Geisha Shannon; son Omar Hightower; sisters Bobbie Hill, Dorothy Knox(Larry); sisters in law Monique Mabry(Henry), Arrie White(Kenneth); brother in law Vernon Johnson(Genny); nieces Lakeisha Parks, Dovie Smith, Felicia Parker(Christopher), Shenika Lawrence, Mechelle Fears(Thornton), Sharrie Edwards(Patrick); nephews Jason Griggs, Mario Knox(Aranya), Andrico Knox, Victor Dozier; many grandchildren, great nieces and nephews, cousins and extended family and friends.
