Obituary For Mrs. Eugenie Edwards

In profound sorrow we announce the passing of Mrs. Eugenie Edwards. Service 11:00 a.m. Friday, May 14 at Holy Cross Episcopal Church 2005 S. Columbia Place Decatur, GA. Dennis Patterson, Rector, Celebrant. Viewing 2:00 p.m.–6:00 p.m. Thursday, May 13 at Grissom-Clark Funeral Home. Her body will be forwarded to Bernard Dowd Funeral Home, 149-20 Northern Blvd., Queens, NY for Interment Tuesday, May 18 at Maple Grove Cemetery, 127-15 Kew Gardens Rd., Queens, NY. Eugenie Edwards passed away peacefully on May 2, 2021. She was a much loved sister, mother and grandmother. Eugenie was born on November 17, 1929, in Guyana South America. Her mother, Muriel Hinds, raised her two daughters Eugenie and Cora, to value education and self-sufficiency. From humble beginnings Eugenie became a registered nurse and Cora became a tenured professor at the University of Ottawa.

Eugenie married the love of her life, Vernon Edwards, in 1954. She was his "Rose" and he wrote poetry for her. They held hands for 55 years until his death in 2009. They had three children Lindsay, Donna, and Terrence. Eugenie and her family immigrated to the United States in the early 60"s. While working as a nurse in New York and raising her children, Eugenie earned her Bachelor of Science degree from Saint Joseph's College.

She was a caring and compassionate nurse and a mentor to many other nurses who continued to seek her advice and support over the years. Eugenie retired from nursing in 1992 and moved with her husband to Decatur Georgia. They enjoyed traveling, entertaining friends and family, and spending Georgia summers with their three grand-children Anthony, Russell, and Alyssa. She was a woman of faith and an active member of Holy Cross.

Eugenie had many friends. She listened more than she spoke, she was never too busy to talk, she was honest, and she was accepting. Eugenie was the center of her family. She loved them unconditionally, celebrated their accomplishments large and small, and could be counted on for words of encouragement. Her homemade bread, bakes and saltfish, chicken curry, and sorrel were legendary. She will be dearly missed and forever in our hearts.
