Harvey M. Johnson was born in Atlanta, Georgia on August 4, 1923. He was the first of four sons born to Harvey and Cora Johnson. He was preceded in death by his wife of fifty-nine years, Ruby Abbott Johnson, and his three brothers, William, Curtis and Napoleon Johnson.
At an early age, Harvey joined his parents and brothers as a member of Central Methodist Church and served many enjoyable years on the Usher Board. When his health would not allow him to attend church regularly, he remained faithful and supportive of Central United Methodist Church.
He began his education at W.H. Crogman Elementary School and graduated from Booker T. Washington High School in 1940. Harvey entered Morris Brown College after high school, but was called to serve in the U.S. Army during World War II. After his military service, Harvey continued his education at Tuskegee Institute, graduating on May 25, 1948.
After a brief teaching experience at Carver High School, Harvey began a distinguished career with the U.S. Postal Service. While working for U.S. Postal Service, Harvey began a rewarding career in Real Estate beginning as a salesman with J.T. Bickers Realty Company. In 1964, he helped found the Atlanta Mortgage and Brokerage Corporation and later formed LBJ, Inc. After thirty-two years of service to the U.S. Postal Service, Harvey retired on December 31, 1985. Harvey always exhibited a tremendous work ethic and strived to provide the very best for his wife and son.
Harvey had a zest for life and was active in many organizations before his health began to decline. His affiliations include Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. Life Member #380, The Joymen Social Club, Harlan Terrace Community Club, Golden Life Member N.A.A.C.P., National Association of Postal Supervisors, Booker T. Washington Class of 1940, Empire Real Estate Board, and The Atlanta Tuskegee Club.
Survivors include, a son Harvey M. Johnson, III; two grandchildren, Mia and Erin; sisters-in-law, Jane Johnson, Ruth Johnson and Nettie Abbott; nephews, William H. Johnson, Napoleon B. Johnson, III and John Hoyle; nieces, Eleanor J. Grier, Donzella J. James, Cynthia Johnson, Patrelle Johnson, Linda Abbott, and Angela Greene.
