Obituary For Mrs. Rubye Moss

Mrs. Rubye Williams Moss was born on February 20, 1913 in Decatur, Georgia to Mr. & Mrs. Ben (Maggie) Williams, Sr. She departed this life on November 1, 2010. At an early age, she accepted Christ and joined the Thankful Missionary Baptist Church under the pastorate of Rev. W. M. Jackson, where she worked in the following departments: Sunday School, Music Department; Vacation Bible School, Junior and Senior Missionary Departments, BYPU Convention. She began her work in the Hopewell Missionary Baptist Association at the age of 13. She worked with the Women’s Department and Youth Congress of Christian Education Department. For more than twenty-five years she worked with the Music Department of the State Baptist Convention of Georgia. She studied and received certificates at the National Baptist Convention of the Congress of Christian Education to enhance her work with the youth department in the Hopewell Association as well as her own church family. She attended the Herring Street Elementary School in Decatur, Georgia and Bryant’s Preparatory Institute, Atlanta, Georgia. After graduating from high school, she attended Clark College, where she received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Elementary Education. She furthered her educational studies at New York University in New York City. There she received her Masters Degree in Social Studies. She was married to the late Luke (Champ) Moss. Although they were not blessed with children, she embraced her nieces and nephews with a mother’s love. Mrs. Moss began her teaching career in the DeKalb County School System at Robert School Elementary School, where she was Assistant Principal. After World War II she taught veterans in evening school. During the summers she served as Director of the Head Start Program at Robert Shaw Elementary School. She ended her teaching career at Canby Lane Elementary School after teaching in the DeKalb School System for more than 31 years. At Thankful Missionary Baptist Church she served as Director of Vacation Bible School for 51 years. She assisted in organizing the Music Department and directed the Maggie Randolph Choir. She organized and served as Director/Pianist/Organist of the Male Chorus and Youth Choir, served as Assistant Superintendent of Sunday School. She also served as program Chairperson of the Thankful Missionary Baptist Church Senior Adult Ministry (SAM). She leaves to cherish her memory a devoted sister, Mrs. Dorothy Williams Scott, many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends, the Floyd, Nelms, and Eberhart families. She leaves a legacy of love, service and dedication to everyone she knew.
