Obituary For Vivian A. Romero

Vivian A. Romero, daughter of Bethelda Williams and Earnest Campbell, was the second child of five siblings: three girls and two boys. Born in Jamaica on March 14, 1914, Sister Vivian traveled with her mother to Panama, Central America at three months of age, where she would spend her adult life until her relocation to Atlanta, Georgia.

Known as Mama, Nana, Auntie, Sis, or Viv, she answered to all with equal love and affection. She worked alongside her late husband, Geraldo Romero, for many years as a tailor and seamstress.

Nana was an avid reader, a delightful, humorous story-teller with a sharp and keen memory; able to recollect facts from five days ago or five decades ago.

Sister Vivian was an Active and dutiful member of Sheppard Lodge in Panama and well-acquainted with Marcus Garvey's Panama branch of his international organization, the Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA).

Grandma truly loved life and the gifts of each day. Even in the midst of turbulence, she would look up and look to the light as a perpetual source of joy and hope; always believing that things would get better.

Sister Vivian was loved by family and friends. She was a kind and continuous fountain of selfless giving, with a heart as big as her body. Her remarkable strength can only be measured by the vast number of lives she nurtured, comforted and uplifted.

She is survived by her two youngest siblings - Albertha Morris and Lucius Robinson, who reside in San Diego, California and Houston, Texas, respectively. She was proud mother of Horacio Romero and Miriam Johnson, the grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother of countless others, many residing primarily in Panama, New York, and California.

In Georgia, Sister Vivian is survived by her daughter Miriam Johnson, grandaughter Imani Jabali, great-granddaughter Malaika Jabali; her nieces Barbara Paul and family; Janice Whitfield and family; nephews Jorge Becford and Alonzo Miller.

We pray to honor her memory by living in the way she has always encouraged us to be, more loving, compassionate and giving to one another.

We will forever carry you in our minds and hearts.
