On Sunday, May 18, 2025, Alma Mae Cheek Powell 96, of Fellowship Dr., Martinsville transitioned peacefully from this earthly life to eternal life at her residence. She was born in South Boston, VA on May 23, 1928, to the late Roy Cheek and Elizabeth Jordon Cheek.
In addition to her parents, Alma was preceded in death by her husband, Alexander Powell; one daughter, Cynthia M. Powell; one son, Wendell Powell; two sisters, Edna Duncan and Elsie Harrison; four brothers, Elijah Cheek, Calvin Cheek, Jasper Cheek and Marshall Cheek; and one great-granddaughter, Ephaya Manns.
Alma was a member of Dan River Baptist Church, South Boston, VA. She retired from Stanley Furniture Company after many years of service.
Alma leaves to cherish her memory two daughters, Joyce A. Turner (Kevin) and Rebecca D. Powell both of Martinsville, VA; two sons, Alonzo Powell (Marilyn) of Martinsville, VA and Jerry J. Powell (Taz) of Michigan; nine grandchildren; fifteen great-grandchildren; one brother, Charles Cheek of South Boston, VA; twenty great grandchildren; twelve great great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, May 24, 2025, at 11 a.m. at the C.R.V. Memorial Chapel at Hairston Funeral Home, 301 Fayette St., Martinsville, VA. Interment will follow at Carver Memorial Gardens, 869 Parkway Dr., Martinsville, VA.
A public viewing will be held on Friday, May 23, 2025, at Hairston Funeral Home between the hours of 1 p.m. until 5 p.m. Live streaming of the funeral service will be available at Hairston Funeral Home live via Facebook.
