Barbara Carter was born September 15, 1935, in Martinsville, VA. She was born to the late Jacob “Jake” Hairston and Nora Fowlkes Hairston, the 6TH of 7 children. Barbara was a graduate of Albert Harris High School.
Barbara lived in Paterson, New Jersey for many years until several of her children were in high school. She and her family then returned to Martinsville. Barbara worked for American Furniture Company where she retired after 22 years.
Barbara was a member of Greater New Bethel Apostolic Church where she attended regularly for many years. She enjoyed spending time with her family. She loved talking on the telephone and was also a great listener.
In addition to her parents, Barbara was preceded in death by her husband, Malcom Carter; daughter, Lisa Davis; five sisters, Ella B. Staples, Harriett Flood, Mary “Sis” Gravely, Juanita Mahan and Virginia Roberts; and one brother, Jacob “Jake” Hairston, Jr.
Fond memories will be cherished by her children, Beverly Epps (Michael) of Richmond, Virginia, Lee Hairston, Anthony Carter (Sonja) both of Piedmont, South Carolina, Melvin Carter, Ron Carter and Danny Carter all of Martinsville, Virginia; 10 grandchildren, Aaron, Tiara, Sean (Ashley), Morgan, Jalen, Esaundra, Isiah, Nelvia, Ricky and Kevin; 9 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
A visitation service will be held on Friday, May 2, 2025, at 11:30 a.m. with the funeral service at 12 noon at Greater New Bethel Apostolic Church, 933 Bethel Lane, Martinsville with Brother Renaldo Hairston, Eulogist. Interment will follow at Carver Memorial Gardens, 869 Parkway Drive, Martinsville.
A public viewing will be held on Thursday, May 1, 2025, at Hairston Funeral Home, 301 Fayette St., Martinsville between the hours of 1 p.m. until 5 p.m. Other times, the family will receive friends at the home, 1163 Banner Street, Martinsville. Live streaming of the funeral service will be available at Hairston Funeral Home live via Facebook.

Ms.Barb was a beautiful lady. we use to talk on the phone I enjoyed the memories she shared about my Mama (Ms. Abbie). She had no problem keeping my brother straight. Rest in Jesus Ms. Barb.
