Calbert E. Hairston, Jr., age 77, of East Church Street Extension in Martinsville, Virginia, peacefully departed this life on Monday, August 31, 2026, at his residence.

Calbert was born on November 24, 1948, in Martinsville, Virginia, to the late Calbert Hairston, Sr. and Bessie Johnson Hairston. He was a beloved son, brother, uncle, relative, and friend whose life touched many people in meaningful ways.

Calbert was a hardworking and dependable man who took pride in serving others. Throughout his working years, he was employed as a custodian at SOVAH Health and also worked as a laundromat attendant. Through his work and daily interactions, he became a familiar and valued presence to those around him.

Though his life was marked by the loss of loved ones, Calbert carried their memories with him. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Mable M. Hairston and Jacqueline C. Pettie, and one brother, James A. Hairston.

Calbert leaves to cherish his memory his nephew, Victor Hairston of Martinsville, Virginia; his niece, Jacquela Pettie of Martinsville, Virginia; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends who will forever remember him with love and affection.

Calbert’s journey on earth has come to an end, but the memories he created and the lives he touched will remain. His presence will be deeply missed by those who knew and loved him. May the love shared, the memories made, and the moments cherished bring comfort to his family and friends during this time of sorrow.

A visitation service will be held on Friday, September 4, 2026, at 11:30 a.m. with the funeral service at 12 noon at the C.R.V. Memorial Chapel at Hairston Funeral Home, 301 Fayette St., Martinsville. Burial will be private.

The family will receive friends at Hairston Funeral Home on Thursday, September 3, 2026, between the hours of 1 p.m. until 5 p.m. Other times, the family will receive friends at the residence, 1509 East Church St. Ext., Martinsville.
