Obituary For Deacon Gloria Hodge Hylton

Gloria Mae Hodge Hylton, 'Sis', was born September 20, 1937 in Martinsville, Virginia. She was the second of three children born to James William Hodge, Sr. and Lucille Spencer Hodge.

Gloria attended Albert Harris School and after graduating in 1955, she attended West Virginia State College, where she majored in Home Economics Education. She returned to Martinsville, and began teaching 6th grade at her beloved Albert Harris in 1959, and continued teaching in the Martinsville City Schools for over 32 years. She referred to all her students as "my girl" or "my boy", and rarely ever forgot a name whenever she met them years later. Sis was a lifelong member of Fayette Street Christian Church, having served as a Sunday School Secretary and teacher, an usher, choir and Christian Women's Fellowship member, Financial Secretary, and a Deacon. Community service was dear to her heart, especially after retirement. She served on the Board of Directors for the Blue Ridge Regional Library, Piedmont Arts, and Amgen Safety Net Foundation; as well as tutoring privately and at Albert Harris Middle School, and teaching cursive writing. In 1993, she was part of a group of local citizens that received an award from Ralph Nader for fighting against the storage of hazardous waste on the West End of Martinsville.

Gloria was united in holy matrimony to Vallie W. Hylton, and was a devoted wife for over 60 years. To their union was born their daughter, Andrea L. Hylton, of Belmont, NC.

On Sunday, September 1, 2024, Sis departed this earthly life to be with her Heavenly Father. She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers James, Jr. and Richard Hodge; nephew, James Christopher Hodge; and beloved grand dog. She leaves to cherish her memory, in addition to her husband and daughter, a host of cousins, family, and friends.

A visitation service will be held on Friday, September 6, 2024, at 10:30 a.m. with the funeral service at 11 a.m. at the C.R.V. Memorial Chapel at Hairston Funeral Home, 301 Fayette St., Martinsville, VA with Pastor Calvin Curry, Eulogist. Interment will follow at Carver Memorial Gardens, 869 Parkway Dr., Martinsville, VA.

To the family/friends of Gloria Hodgd Hylton: We thank you for accepting our sincere condolences on the loss/heavenly departure of Gloria. We knew her, admired her beauty from the time of younger days, going forward. Her coiffed hair of a perfect French Roll was a work of art. Our Mom, Liiie E.Penn was one of her good friends/fellow Sisters-in-Christ of FSCC! Godspeed 24/7! The Penn Family Members...

Mrs. Hylton was my favorite teacher of all time! When I went into the ministry, she would often follow me as I ministered during revivals, etc. She was instrumental in shaping my vocabulary and pushing me to where I am today. She will be dearly missed. Our deepest and most sincere condolences to the family. Pastor & Mrs. Mandell Motley

The woman that taught me to be proud of my height. You will be missed. Love you Leah Jean

Sharing in the transition of a true friend, Gloria Hodge -Hylton. Gloria and I became friends in a strange way. We were at Fayette Street Christian Street during a meeting for the AHH School Class Reunion. Gloria was dominating the meeting, and I told her to "SHUT UP". Mouths flew open and there was silence. I gained her respect and we talked every day on the phone. She and Vallie did so many nice things for me when I had death in the family and brought Cabbage and Pancake Mix to me whenever they went on the BLUE RIDGE PARKWAY. She shared her health issues with me when she received the news. That let me know that she truly cared about me. Vallie, Andrea and other family members, Cherish the memories and share them. Marguerite and Tim

To the Hylton Family: Thank you for sharing Mrs. Hylton with this community. She was a blessing. Mrs. Hylton was a woman of intelligence, integrity, and influence. She was proud of her race, gender, and people. When Mrs. Hylton made a commitment, it was her bond and she kept it. In her, the young, old, and in between had a role model. I was so proud to have her as a supporter. No matter when or where I saw her, Mrs. Hylton encouraged me to do the right thing no matter who challenged me. She was a friend and I was thankful for her. Hylton, as I called her, will always be known as, "one of a kind!" Her beauty shined wherever she went and her starch voice always made you feel you were in good hands! Her presence will be missed but knowing she is present with the Lord eases the hurt. She was a jewel! Love, David Wade

Her memory will live on through her participation in a short film - Once upon a Village. It was shown at the New College concerning history of Martinsville. What Black lives were like during doing the era of Doctor Dana O. BALDWIN.

Such a sweet and kind lady. My sympathy and condolences to the family. Never will forget her kindness to me. Betty H.

Mrs. Hylton was my sixth grade social studies teacher at Albert Harris. I remember her as a kind woman with a good sense of humor. I recall her giving us what in retrospect was a unique and very impactful assignment. Each student was assigned a country to research and share a report with the class about various aspects of the culture, and she invited us to prepare a food native to our assigned country to share with the class if we so chose. I was assigned East Germany and elected to cook kielbasa sautéed in a tangy sauce for the class to sample. Most of the students had never heard of kielbasa but liked the dish I brought. Even Mrs. Hylton thought it was good. Seeing this through an adult perspective, I give her tremendous credit for being brave and selfless enough to be willing to try foreign foods prepared by sixth graders for the sake of expanding their horizons. That was my first experience with intentionally seeking out food from another culture. In the years since I've taken great joy in trying new cuisines and I credit her with first encouraging me to seek those experiences. I'm grateful to have had Mrs. Hylton as a teacher. I offer my deepest condolences to her family and friends.
