I will never forget the memories me and DJ shared together. I will never forget the days I would spend with DJ playing video games at his house or the days at my great grandparents when we would run around the front yard playing tag or hide and seek. Then we would go inside and he would show me how to play on the piano while eating candy that great grandma would share with us. I'm going to miss those moments forever. DJ was the best big cousin I could've asked for and inspired me to be an amazing person and to put my mind to whatever I wanted to do, DJ will forever be in my heart. -Drevion
I only had the privilege of being Derrick's clarinet instructor for one year but I will cherish that time forever. He's an amazing young man that never failed to brighten the days of others. His positivity was infectious and he never hesitated to lend a helping hand to those around him. He will be deeply missed. Daniel Hayden
Derrick is and will ever be a SHAW BEAR! He is such a talented smart, secretly funny, and dedicated person. I struggled yesterday as I had to start the season. Derrick is one of a kind and we lost an amazing person. It has been an honor to have him in the Band at Shaw University!
Rosa,
We are praying for and with you, as we all share your grief during this time.
Send my love and prayers to Derrick's family. He was an exceptional man with a positive personality, and you could definitely see his passion for the Platinum sound every time it was time for them to perform. I remember walking up to Derrick in the Cafe and saying to him, "Man, you're a really cool dude."
-Robert S. III Fellow Shaw Bear
Sending many condolences to the family. Derrick always shined bright with his energetic moves and aura during performances in the Shaw University Platnium Sound Band. May he rest in eternal peace. "There are some who bring a light so great to the world that even after they have gone the light remains". - Janell Odom, fellow Shaw Bear

I met Derrick when I was a freshman in high school. He always seemed so happy and was friendly with everyone! He lit up the band room with his awesome dance moves, his laughter and his crazy hair. Once there was a time when I was so terrible at a dance in class and Derrick was there for me to teach me every step one by one. I only have 2 pictures with Derrick that I will always cherish forever. may he rest easy - 🕊️
My condolences to the family. Derrick is one of the best musicians I have ever met at Shaw University. He is one of the only people that made me want to better my craft, and gave me healthy competition on all the instruments we played together. I'm going to miss him, his charisma, dedication and energy. I will never meet anyone else like him. Thank you for sharing yourself with us Derrick. To the family, may you all find peace in this difficult time, as I know how much you cared for him, especially his mother. -Jahzmine Parker

Like a comet Blazing 'cross the evening sky Gone too soon Like a rainbow Fading in the twinkling of an eye Gone too soon Shiny and sparkly And splendidly bright Here one day Gone one night Like the loss of sunlight On a cloudy afternoon Gone too soon Like a castle Built upon a sandy beach Gone too soon Like a perfect flower That is just beyond your reach Gone too soon Born to amuse, to inspire, to delight Here one day Gone one night Like a sunset Dying with the rising of the moon Gone too soon Gone too soon
