George Dennis Hairston, 72, of Aaron Street, Martinsville, VA departed from this life on Friday, January 2, 2026, at his residence. He was born in Martinsville, VA on February 23, 1953, to the late George R. Hairston and Mildred Watkins Hairston Staples.
George was a graduate of George Washington Carver High School class of 1971. After completing high school, George enlisted in the United States Army where he served his country honorably as a lieutenant. After returning to civilian life, George retired from Nelson Automotives after many years of service.
George leaves to cherish his memory his wife, Shelba C. Hairston of Martinsville, VA; one daughter, Bryana K. Hairston of Martinsville, VA; one stepdaughter, Karica King of Greensboro, NC; one granddaughter, Aria Simmons of Martinsville, VA; two step-grandsons, Dante' Dones of Martinsville, VA and Kaysaun Mitchell of Roanoke, VA; one great-grandchild, Marley Mitchell of Roanoke, VA; one brother, Jewel V. Hairston of Callands, VA; four sisters, Arnita Hairston of Ridgeway, VA, Charmaine Thomas and Jacqeline Burton both of Martinsville, VA and Ella Mae Hairston of Greensboro, NC; one uncle, Richard Watkins (Delilah) of Atlanta, GA; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
A visitation service will be held on Friday, January 9, 2026, at 11:30 a.m. with the funeral service at 12 noon at Refuge Temple Ministries, 205 Clearview Dr., Martinsville, VA, with Bishop Alan Preston, Eulogist. Interment will follow at Carver Memorial Gardens, 869 Parkway Dr., Martinsville, VA.
A public viewing will be held on Thursday, January 8, 2026, at Hairston Funeral Home between the hours of 1 p.m. until 5 p.m. Other times, the family will receive friends at the home of his daughter, Bryana Hairston, 911 Second St., Martinsville from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. daily. Live streaming of the funeral service will be available at Hairston Funeral Home live via Facebook.
