Obituary For James W. King
On Thursday, October 9, 2025, our beloved father, grandfather and friend James Walter King, Jr. of Martinsville peacefully transitioned from this earthly life at the age of 76. He was born in Martinsville, VA on July 23, 1949, to Thelma Williamson King and the late James Walter King, Sr.
In addition to his parents, James was preceded in death by three brothers, Larry King, Rudolph King and Donald King.
James was a member of Pilgrim Missionary Baptist Church. After graduating from Albert Harris High School in 1967, James enlisted in the United States Navy. He retired from Applied Felts after many years of dedicated service.
James leaves to cherish his memory one daughter, Treva F. Scoggins (Alexander) of Durham, NC; his mother, Thelma Williamson King of Martinsville, VA; grandson, Brandon Scoggins (Chandlier) of Durham, NC; three sisters, Mary Spencer, Dorothy King and Cynthia Williams (Michael) all of Martinsville, VA; three brothers, Michael King, Timothy King (Katie) and Larry King all of Martinsville, VA; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
A visitation service will be held on Thursday, October 16, 2025, at 11:30 a.m. with the funeral service at 12 noon at the C.R.V. Memorial Chapel at Hairston Funeral Home with Dr. Eric Hairston, Eulogist. Interment will follow at Carver Memorial Gardens, 869 Parkway Dr., Martinsville with Military Honors.
A public viewing will be held on Wednesday, October 15, 2025, at Hairston Funeral Home, 301 Fayette St., Martinsville between the hours of 1 p.m. until 5 p.m. At other times, the family will receive friends at the home of his mother, Thelma King, 1305 Cardinal Ln., Martinsville. Live streaming of the funeral service will be available at Hairston Funeral Home live via Facebook.

I am sorry to hear about the passing of James (Shu). I have know him for many, many years and was always delighted to be around him and hear him talk and joke. Our dad cherished his friendship with Mr.King deeply. Their daily calls were filled with laughter, jokes, and genuine care, a bond that seemed to brighten both of their days. We will always remember how much their friendship meant. He will truly be missed, but his warmth and humor will live on in our memories.
