John Scales, 64, of Oakgrove Ave., Martinsville, VA, departed this life on Sunday, August 1, 2021 at SOVAH Health-Martinsville. He was born in Columbus, Ohio on July 16, 1957, the son of the late David Scales, and the late Vergie Robinson Scales.
John was a graduate of Martinsville High School class of 1975, and a 2011 graduate of Patrick Henry Community College. John was a member of the Church of Our Lord Jesus Christ, where he sang with the Joy Boys, and in the choir. He was a United States Navy veteran.
John loved to sing and had a beautiful voice. He had an amazing sense of humor.
John leaves to cherish his memory, his wife, Carolyn S. Scales of the home; one daughter, Jeanetta Carter of Youngstown, OH; four sons, Adrian Scales of Chatham, VA, Joseph (Kenyatta) Spencer of Troutville, VA, Jason Spencer of Danville, VA, and Justin (Amanda) Spencer of Collinsville, VA; one sister, Annette (Edward) Harris of Jersey City, NJ; two brothers, Howard (Belinda) Scales of Axton, VA, and David (Brinda) Scales of Martinsville, VA; nine grandchildren, Makii Scales, Isaiah Scales, Harley Spencer, Joshua Spencer, Joel Spencer, Brayden Spencer, Brooke Rivers, Paydence Hedrick, and Haden Rakes; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, August 6, 2021 at 1 p.m. at the C.R.V. Memorial Chapel at Hairston Funeral Home with Bishop Eugene E. Ramos, Sr., Eulogist. Burial will follow at Carver Memorial Gardens. A public viewing will be held on Thursday, August 5, 2021 at Hairston Funeral Home between the hours of 1 p.m. until 6 p.m. In accordance with the CDC, a face covering, and social distancing is required.
