On Friday, April 19, 2024, Jonia Bernice Matthews, 70, of Chip Circle, Collinsville, VA transitioned from this earthly life to eternal life at SOVAH Health-Martinsville. She was born May 29, 1953, in Henry County, VA to the late John Henry Smith and Emily Flood Smith.
In addition to her parents, Jonia was preceded in death by her husband, Edward Leon Matthews, her sister, Brenda Smith, and five brothers, James H. Smith, John Smith, Curtis Smith, Benjamin Smith, and Roy Smith.
Jonia was of the Primitive Baptist Faith. She was a graduate of George Washington Carver High School. Prior to becoming disabled, Jonia was employed by Hampton Inn.
Those left to cherish her memory include two daughters, Brenda M. Stovall of Martinsville, VA, and Kimberly A. Barbour of Collinsville, VA; one granddaughter, Consandra Matthews of Charlotte, NC; two great-grandchildren, Deauri Matthews, and Ava Teel both of Charlotte, NC; caregiver, Traketa Edmonds of Martinsville, VA; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
A visitation service will be held on Monday, April 29, 2024, at 11:30 a.m. until the time of the funeral service at 12 p.m. at the C.R.V. Memorial Chapel at Hairston Funeral Home, 301 Fayette St., Martinsville, VA. Interment will follow at Flat Rock Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery, 5975 Dyer Store Rd., Martinsville, VA. A public viewing will be held on Sunday, April 28, 2024, at Hairston Funeral Home between the hours of 1 p.m. until 5 p.m. Other times, the family will be receiving friends at 1151 E. Church St., Apt. 12A, Martinsville, VA.
