On, Thursday, March 30, 2023 at 10:39 am our beloved Mother, Grandmother and Sister finished her earthly race and will now receive her heavenly reward.
Leonia Mae Deering Hairston was born in in Pittsylvania County, Virginia on February 6, 1933, to the late Rufus E. and Nettie Madeline Deering. She attended Pittsylvania County Schools, graduating from the former Southside High School. Leonia was employed by Sara Lee Knit products formerly Pannill Knitting Company. She was a loyal, dedicated lifelong member of Christ’s Temple United Holy Church where she attended faithfully until her decline in health.
Leonia was married to the late Oscar Hairston and who, together were blessed with two children.
Leonia was preceded in death by her husband of 47 years.
She leaves to mourn and cherish her memory two sons, Oscar Donnell Hairston of the home and Antonio Eugene “Gene” Hairston of Indianapolis, Indiana. Three Grandchildren: Vanessa Shantell Hairston Sherer (Luke) Chicago, Illinois, Kara Danielle Hairston of Indianapolis, Indiana and James Donnell Hairston of Jacksonville, FL. One brother Wallace E. Deering of Martinsville, VA and one sister Carlotta Deering of Axton. Two nieces: Tiffany Deering Perry (Kevin) and Tonya Deering Dixon (Courtney) One surviving aunt Pearl Adams of Pittsburg, PA; one great niece Kennedy Dixon; great nephew, Caleb Dixon; and a host of cousins, other relatives and friends.
A visitation service will be held on Tuesday, April 4, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. until the time of the funeral service at 11:30 a.m. at the Christ Temple United Holy Church, Axton, VA with Elder Leonard Thompson, eulogist. Burial will follow at the Danville Memorial Gardens, Danville, VA. A public viewing will be held on Monday, April 3, 2023, at Hairston Funeral Home between the hours of 1 p.m. until 5 p.m. Other times, the family will be receiving friends at the home 3005 Martin Drive, Martinsville, VA.
