On Friday, May 9, 2025, Mother Dorothy M. Hairston 96, of Collinsville, VA transitioned peacefully from this earthly life at Carillion Roanoke Memorial Hospital. She was born on March 25, 1929, in Virginia to the late George Marshall Wells and Lucy Jane Wells.
In addition to her parents, Mother Dorothy was preceded in death by her first husband, James Albert Manns; second husband, Oscar Hairston; one son, James Leon Manns; three sisters, Hazel Wells, Delois Joyce and Queen Elizabeth Wells; three brothers, Robert Wells, John Henry Wells and Phylis Wells; and one grandson, Arraheem Manns.
At an early age, Mother Dorothy gave her life to the Lord and became a faithful member of Faith Tabernacle Holiness Church where she served in a variety of capacities. She served as the Church Mother, an Elder, on the Missionary Department, Sunday School and Choir member. Mother Dorothy retired from J.D. Bassett after many years of dedicated service.
Mother Dorothy leaves behind a legacy of love, faith and resilience through her daughter, Shelia M. Carter of Collinsville, VA; three sons, George Manns (Rosa) of Anniston, AL, Everett Manns (Lori) of Oxford, AL, and Sherman Manns (Lisa) of Bassett, VA; one sister, Gracie Ferguson of Bassett, VA; one brother, Marshall Lee Wells (Alberta) of Bassett, VA; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, church family and friends.
A visitation service will be held on Wednesday, May 14, 2025, 11:30 a.m. with the funeral service at 12 noon at Faith Tabernacle Holiness Church, 370 Wells Hollow Rd., Bassett, VA with Bishop Loretta Dillard, Eulogist. Interment will follow at Carver Memorial Gardens 869 Parkway Dr., Martinsville, VA.
A public viewing will convene on Tuesday, May 13, 2025, at Hairston Funeral Home, 301 Fayette St., Martinsville between the hours of 1 p.m. until 5 p.m. The family will be present during this time. Other times, the family will receive friends at the home, 60 Charles St., Apt. 12, Collinsville, VA between the hours of 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. daily. Live streaming of the funeral service will be available at Hairston Funeral Home live via Facebook.
