On Thursday, October 19, 2023, Mother Roxie Anna “Big Mama” H. Martin 83, of Martin Ln., Axton, VA transitioned from this earthly life to eternal life at her residence. She was born in Henry County, VA on September 10, 1940, the daughter of General Grant Hairston and Virginia Adams Hairston who preceded her in death.
In addition to her parents, Mother Roxie was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Edward Martin; one son, Frank Martin, Jr.; one sister, Rose Ware, and five brothers, Bishop Albert Hairston, William Hairston, Curtis Hairston, George Hairston, Jessie Hairston, five stepbrothers, and one stepsister.
Mother Roxie was a faithful member of Greater Refuge Center of Deliverance Church where she served on the Mother's Board, and she was a Missionary. She retired from Pulaski Furniture Company after many years of service.
Those left to cherish her memory include two daughters, Martha Mullins, and Freatta Wilson both of Axton, VA; three sons, Herman Martin of Danville, VA, Chuckie L. Martin of Axton, VA, and Tony Martin of Martinsville, VA; six grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; two sisters, Adelene H. Giles, and Brenda H. Jones both of Axton, VA; one brother, Tommy Joe Hairston (Mary) of Axton, VA; one stepsister, Lelia P. Lieteau of Roanoke, VA; special daughter, Kathaleen Pat Penn of Martinsville, VA; special son, Brad Hairston of Axton, VA; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, church family, and friends.
A visitation services will be held on Wednesday, October 25, 2023, at 11:30 a.m. until the time of the funeral service at 12 noon at the Greater Refuge Center of Deliverance Church, 718 Stoney Mountain Rd., Martinsville, VA with Elder Percy Wilson, Eulogist. The burial will follow at Greater Refuge Center of Deliverance Church Cemetery. A public viewing will be held on Tuesday, October 24, 2023, at Hairston Funeral Home between the hours of 1 p.m. until 5 p.m. Other times, the family will be receiving friends at the home, 744 Martin Ln., Axton, VA.
