Deacon Nathaniel Wycliffe Carter, Sr., 88, of Martinsville Virginia transitioned from Earth to Glory on Tuesday, November 3, 2020. He was born July 16, 1932 to the late Frederick and Alma W. Carter.
In addition to his parents, Deacon Nathaniel was proceeded in death by his son, Nathaniel “Wycliffe” Carter, Jr.; three brothers, Frederick Carter, Jr Howard Carter, and Timothy Carter, four sisters, Joan Brown, Jean Clemmons, Bertha Hairston, and Berdie Jones.
Deacon Nathaniel was educated in Martinsville Henry County Public Schools and was a diligent worker to support his family. He worked as a salesman at McCollum-Ferrell Shoe Store for more than 30 years and was loved by all who knew him. He also worked at American Furniture, Martinsville Memorial Hospital, and his last employment was at the law office of Daniel, Medley, and Kirby.
After retirement, he enjoyed spending time with his son at Carters Clothing greeting and entertaining the customers.
Deacon Nathaniel joined Mt. Sinai Apostle Church at an early age under the leadership of Bishop J.C. Richardson, Sr. and worked faithfully in the church. He served as President of the Deacon Board, Sunday School Superintendent, Trustee Board, member of Finance Committee, and member of the J.C. R. choir. He was also dedicated to the Tuesday evening prayer and Wednesday evening Bible study. Deacon Nathaniel had love and admiration for his current Pastor, Bishop J.C. Richardson, Jr. He was always willing to give words of support and encouragement to the church family.
Deacon Nathaniel is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Gladys P. Carter of the home; one son, Sandy T. Carter (Kathy); two daughters. Cynthia R. Brooks and Sharon C. Echols (Sherman) all of Martinsville; four sisters, Janice Kirby (John), Ada Carter, Siberia Hairston, and Senora Mahan; four sisters-in-law, Doris Carter, Elizabeth Carter, Sally Mahan, and Barbara Bleecker; four grandchildren, five great grandchildren; and a host of extended family and friends.
Special “Thank You” to the Mountain Valley Hospice for all the love, care, and attention given to our dad, Nathaniel Carter.
A funeral service for Deacon Nathaniel will be held Sunday, November 8, 2020 at 2 P.M. at Mt. Sinai Apostle Church in Martinsville, VA, with Bishop J.C. Richardson Jr. officiating. A public viewing will be held Saturday, November 7, 2020 at Hairston Funeral Home from 1 P.M. to 5 P.M. In accordance with the CDC, a face covering and social distancing will be required.
