Roxie Spencer Scales 74, of Spencer, VA departed this life on July 5, 2025, at her residence. She was a Henry County native, born April 14, 1951, to the late Robert Lee Spencer, Sr. and Nannie Spencer.
In addition to her parents, Roxie was preceded in death by her husband, William Leon Scales; four brothers, Willie F. Spencer, Robert Lee Spencer, Jr., Cornell Spencer and James Daniel "JD" Spencer; six sisters, Natalie Long, Annie “Dot” Spencer, Verna Mae Hairston, Doris Ben Avram, Geraldine Lewis and Janet Hairston.
She became a member of Christian View Missionary Baptist Church at an early age, where she served on the Usher and Nurses Board, she was Vice President of the Missionary Board and served as the Treasurer of the Horsepasture FCE Club. She also served faithfully at the Horsepasture Fire Department serving the community. Roxie served as an Officer of Elections for Henry County. She was a graduate of George Washington Carver High School class of 1971. She retired from the Henry County School System.
Roxie leaves to cherish her memories two daughters, Sharon “Toy” Stephens (Nate) and Karen “Tink” Harris (Antonio) all of Danville, VA; two grandchildren, Zoe Scales and Nyla Stephens; three sisters, Hazel Spencer of Spencer, VA, Mary Jane Spencer of Connecticut and Patricia Scales (Doug) of Martinsville, VA; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends; special friend, Henry Holmes.
A visitation service will be held on Monday, July 14, 2025, at 11:30 a.m. with a service of remembrance at 12 noon at Christian View Missionary Baptist Church, 360 Arrowhead Cir., Spencer, VA with Pastor Gregory C. Perkins, Eulogist. Interment will follow at Christian View Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery.
Family and friends may visit Hairston Funeral Home on Friday, July 11, 2025, between the hours of 1 p.m. until 4:30 p.m. Other times, the family will receive friends at residence, 18779 A.L. Philpott Hwy., Spencer, VA beginning July 10th, 11th, and 12th between the hours of 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. Live streaming of the service will be available at Hairston Funeral Home live via Facebook.

With deep sympathy. Rosie and I met at the YMCA pool. We were never strangers from that day forward. She always displayed a smile. Had something funny to say which made you laugh or encouraging words to uplift your spirit. Rogue you are missed already. 😪

I was Soo saddened to learn of Roxie's passing! Roxie and I worked together years ago and would always go out to lunch together.Roxie was a very Sweet young lady w/a Beautiful personality! Mrs Roxie was a sweet lady.She was my son's aide on the school bus.When ever she saw me ,she would ask how was he doing in school. I will always remember Mrs Roxie, because they shared the same Birthday. My condolences to the family.
