On Wednesday, April 29, 2026, our beloved mother, aunt and friend, Shirley Shannon, 90, of Hope Mills, NC peacefully transitioned from this life at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center, Fayetteville, NC. She was born in Gilliam, West Virginia on April 28, 1936, to the late David Gravely and Irma Turner Gravely.
In addition to her parents, Shirley was preceded in death by her husband, Gentry Shannon; one daughter, Jeanie DeLeon; two sons, Gary Ewans and Jerry Ewans; three sisters, Vera Carter, Ester Carter and Ethel G. Farrell; and four brothers, William Gravely, David Gravely, Cecil Gravely and Charles Gravely.
Shirley was a member of St. Paul High Street Baptist Church where she was a member of the Senior Choir. She was a graduate of Kimball High School, Kimball, West Virginia. Shirley was a Nurse Aide for many years prior to her retirement.
Shirley leaves to cherish her memory two sons, Marcus Ewans and his wife, Rose of Hope Mills, NC, and Fred Ewans of Warwick, Rhode Island; one daughter, Zenobia E. Ewans of Columbus, OH; nineteen grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
A visitation service will be held on Wednesday, May 13, 2026, at 11:30 a.m. with the funeral service at 12 noon at St. Paul High Street Baptist Church, 401 Fayette St., Martinsville, VA with Reverend Thomas Devins, Eulogist. Interment will be private.
The family will receive friends at Hairston Funeral Home, 301 Fayette St., Martinsville on Tuesday, May 12, 2026, from 1 p.m. until 5 p.m. Beginning Monday, May 11, 2026, the family will began receiving friends at 311 Wren Ct., Martinsville. Live streaming of the funeral service will be available at Hairston Funeral Home live via Facebook.
