Agnes was born in New Roads, Louisiana on February 4, 1940. She was one of three daughters; Beatrice, Jeanette, and Agnes. They were born to John and Odetia Gaines Meyer. Their dear mother passed away at an early age so the girls were reared by their maternal grandparents, Alexander and Rosalie Gaines. Later in their life, they reared by their father, John Meyer and stepmother, Virginia Solomon Meyer.
Agnes attended St. Augustine Catholic Elementary School where was baptized, made her first communion and confirmation. Agnes sang in the church choir through Junior High School. She was a graduate of New Roads High School, class of 1961. After high school, she enrolled in Southern University, Baton Rouge, Louisiana. During her time at Southern University, Agnes was a volunteer in the Civil Rights Movement. While attending college she met a bright intelligent young man named Solomon Birdsong. Agnes and Solomon dated, fell in love, and married on June 16, 1962 in Point Coupee Parish, Louisiana. After Solomon graduated college, he and Agnes moved from South Louisiana to Jonesboro, Louisiana. After moving to Jonesboro, Louisiana, they gave birth to their first son, Solomon Jr. A few years later, they moved to Greenwood, Louisiana where their second son, Philander was born. After a lot of hard work, they were able to build a beautiful new home for their family in Shreveport, Louisiana.
Agnes managed her home and family while working for Lucent Technologies. There she worked her way up from assembly worker, to inspector, then supervisor until she retired. Agnes and Solomon’s love took them though many triumphs and trials but through it all they loved each other for 63 years. Agnes was a devout Christian and was a long-time member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, Shreveport, LA and later, Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Shreveport, LA. She influenced her family to pray and always trust in God.
Agnes is predeceased by her husband Solomon Sr, father, mother, father and mother-in-law, two sister’s, two sisters-in-law’s, seven brother-in-law’s, and many family members and friends.
Cherishing her beautiful spirit are her sons, Solomon Birdsong Jr, St. Francisville, Louisiana; Philander Birdsong (Nanette), Arlington, Texas; remaining sister Jeanette Huff of Baton Rouge, Louisiana; two sister-in-law’s Josephine Birdsong Robinson, Greenwood, Louisiana, and Ardina Birdsong Fredrick of Greenwood, Louisiana; one brother-in-law Maurice Birdsong of Phoenix, Arizona; many nieces, nephews, and a host of family and friends.
Agnes was a priceless treasure to everyone in her family, friends, and anyone who met her.
She will be deeply missed and loved forever!
Visitation will be held on Friday, January 23, 2026 from 4PM to 6PM at Hall's Celebration Center, 9348 Scenic Hwy Baton, Rouge, LA 70807.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Saturday, January 24, 2026 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 1565 Curtis Street. Baton Rouge, LA 70807.
