Gloria Jean Boatner Ferguson, affectionately known as “Red” was born on January 20, 1948 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana to the late Israel Boatner, Sr. and Ivory Boatner. She was the sixth of eight children. She peacefully departed this earthly life on Tuesday, January 27, 2026 at Baton RougeGeneral Hospital on Bluebonnet in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
Gloria accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized at Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. At the time of her death, she was a faithful and dedicated member of First Emmanuel Missionary. She loved her church family and always had a smile on her face.
Gloria grew up in Baton Rouge, Louisiana where she attended Capital Senior High School. She later attended Capital Area Nursing School, obtaining her licensure as a LPN. After receiving her nursing license, she served as a nurse for 47 years until her retirement in 2025. Gloria worked at many nursing homes throughout the Chicago and Baton Rouge areas. She had a heart of gold; giving and helping others was what she did best. She loved all of the patients, understanding that nursing was more than just an occupation for her, and would often express how much she cared for them. She dedicated her life to serving the sick, but it was truly her calling. She would often tell us stories of her patient experiences and spoke fondly of the staff and her working relationships. Gloria retired from Mid City Community Nursing and Rehabilitation in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
Gloria will be deeply missed by her son, Troy, Sr. (Stephanie) of Baton Rouge, Louisiana; two sisters, Carol B. Wilson of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Israel DeGree of Lansing, Michigan; one brother, Gerald Boatner (Sandra) of Baton Rouge, Louisiana; two grandchildren, Kennedi Boatner and Troy Boatner, II; a special friend Anthony Kennedy and a host of nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, and many friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Israel Boatner, Sr. and Ivory Boatner; her son, Howard Boatner; sister, Shirley Boatner; brothers, James Harris, Israel Boatner, Jr., Gregory Boatner; and Godchild, Lamar Wilson.
Family and friends of Gloria are invited to attend the Visitation on Thursday, February 5, 2026 at Hall's Celebration Center, 9348 Scenic Hwy. Baton Rouge, LA from 4:00pm to 6:00pm. Visitation will resume on Friday, February 6, 2026 at First Emmanuel Missionary Baptist Church, 575 Education St. Baton Rouge, LA from 10:00am until Funeral Services begin at 11:00am. Interment: Southern Memorial Gardens.
Troy, your mother will truly be missed. She loved you, Stephanie, and her grandchildren dearly. May the soul of the faithful departed rest in peace.
