Obituary For Mother Gladys Sermons (91)

Mother Gladys M. Sermons (age 91) passed away on Tuesday, July 6, 2021 at South Georgia Medical Center with her daughter (Brenda) by her side. Mother Sermons or “Mama Sermons” as she was affectionately called, was born to the late Mr. William and Mary Lou Maxwell on June 4, 1930. She grew up in Hahira, GA and was educated in the Lowndes County Public School System. Later in life she furthered her education by completing a Certification Program in Diet and Nutrition at South Georgia State College. She was employed and retired from the Lowndes County School System where she worked for more than 20 years as Manager of the school cafeteria. Following retirement from the school system, she fulfilled a lifelong dream when she became the proud and happy owner of “Mama’s Kitchen” in Valdosta, Georgia. There she served delicious soul food as she shared wisdom and advice with her customers until she retired fully in 2001. However, her passion for feeding the body and souls of her loved ones never ended.

In 1949, Mother Sermons married the love of her life Superintendent Arletha Sermons. Eight children were born to this union, one whom did not survive birth and seven of whom grew up with the most wonderful mother in the world! She accepted Christ early during her marriage in 1952 and joined Rocky Hill COGIC under Pastor John Morris. She remained a long-time member of Rocky Hill before joining her husband (Superintendent A. Sermons) as a member of St. Paul COGIC in Cecil, Georgia. For many years Mother Sermons served as the District Missionary of the Baxley Georgia District and Assistant to Mother Amy L. Engram, Jurisdictional Supervisor of Women, in the COGIC Southern Georgia Second Ecclesiastic Jurisdiction. Mother Sermons loved the Lord and was known as an encourager to everyone she met. She believed that “with God all things are possible” and that “any goal set could be accomplished with the help of the Lord.”

It is at this time, that the Harrington Funeral Home Inc., stand in humbled submission to the will of God as this loving Sermons Family announce the heavenly transition of their beloved family matriarch.

With tear-filled eyes and aching hearts, they have given distinct and detailed instructions to Harrington Funeral Home, Inc. to promulgate to all on the earthly transition of:

Mother Gladys Sermons (91), God’s gift given on Wednesday, June 4, 1930 - and now, God in his infinite wisdom decided to call from labor to reward his precious jewel and caused her to transition from this life into life everlasting on Tuesday, July 06, 2021.

The Sermons Family will host family hour on Friday, July 16, 2021 from 5pm to 7pm at St Paul COGIC in Cecil Georgia.

Life Celebration Services will be held on Saturday, July 17, 2021 at 1:00 PM at Union Cathedral Church - 1050 East Hill Avenue. Bishop Wade McCrae is Pastor, Superintendent James C. Futch (Eulogist), Superintendent Donald Battles (Presider). Mother Sermons will be laid to rest during a private burial ceremony at a later date in the Rocky Hill Church Cemetery.

To the family, we know your loss is deep, and your sorrow is great, but we want you to know that we share in your sorrow, but more importantly, we recognize that this loss is Heaven’s Gain

To the Sermons Family: Even though I only got a chance to meet Mother Sermons only a few times while visiting my best sister/friend Garnette in Valdosta. But, I've known her son Curtis almost 50 years and several of her other children for many years so I know the caliber of a person who raised amazing children who did well and loved the lord and loved her unconditional. The Dr. Otis C. Lane Family offers our heart felt sympathy to our cousin, the Sermons Family, in the loss of Mother Gladys. My mother and her were dear friends and loved the Lord with all their heart, mind, soul, and strength. Also, Mother Gladys worked in the cafeteria at Hahira Elementary & Middle schools during my tenure as Assistant Principal. She made sure that I had a scrupulous meal each day with her special touch (she was a superb cook as many of us you who have eaten her food can attest to). Her legacy will live on in our hearts and memories. May God continue to bless, comfort, and strengthen the Sermons Family during your time of sorrow.
